Bulgaria's previous appearances: 2 year(s) out of 51 [note] Years participated: 2005- [note] Best result: 17th in Semi (2006)
Bulgaria made its first appearance at Eurovision in 2005, with Kaffe's song 'Lorrain' failing to make much of an impression. Nevertheless, having languished at the wrong end of most fan polls, the song came over surprisingly strongly live, and its 49 points and 19th place in the Semi Final was better than many had expected. There was some speculation that the poor result might dissuade Bulgaria from taking part again, but happily the country came back for another go in 2006, with the beautiful Mariana Popova singing 'Let me cry'. The song was stunning, and Mariana gave a powerful vocal performance. However, 17th place, though an improvement on the year before, was still not enough to secure a place in the Final. As a result, Bulgaria finds itself in the Semi Final for the third successive year. Get 'The Eurovision Song Contest: The Offical History' at Amazon.co.uk

What I said prior to the Semi Final: "Bulgaria's entry brings together singer Elitsa Todorova and percussionist Stoyan Yankulov to perform 'Water' (in Bulgarian, despite its English title). The song is remarkable - unlike anything you've ever heard at Eurovision before, it's a fabulous, dramatic fusion of Bulgaran ethnic sounds and contemporary drum and bass, proving that it's possible to create a Eurovision entry that truly represents the culture of where it's from while still sounding modern and fresh."
My prediction for Semi Final: 4th to 6th My prediction for Final: 4th to 6th, possible winner What I predicted prior to the Semi Final: "I like this entry very much, and feedback around the web - including the betting and fan polls - suggests that it might well be the song that propels Bulgaria into the Final for the first time. Opening the Semi Final, the draw arguably isn't great. On the other hand, few entries stand more chance of being remembered after 27 subsequent songs than this one. I predict that Bulgaria will qualify easily from the Semi Final, maintaining or even improving its position on Saturday. Depending on the draw and performance, it's one of around half a dozen songs that I think has a chance of winning the whole thing. " Want an alternative prediction?
