Finishing 2nd with Edyta Gorniak's wonderful 'To nie ja!' in 1994, Poland had a fantastic start to its Eurovision career but has been trying to live up to it ever since. The country finished a disappointing 18th in 1995, 15th in 1996, 11th in 1997, 17th in 1998 and 18th in 1999, before having to miss 2000's contest due to its poor five-year average. Its return in 2001 was barely worth the effort, finishing a new low of 20th and being relegated again. Happily, 2003's contest proved much more fruitful, with Ich Troje and 'Keine grenzen - zadnych granic' finishing a very respectable 7th. Cannily, to appeal to as many countries as possible, the song was performed in a mix of Polish, German and Russian - Germany rewarded it with its 12 points, but Russia was unimpressed and gave it no points at all. It was a beautiful song, and with one of the best performances at the 2003 contest it really deserved to finish higher; nevertheless, 7th was quite enough to give Poland an automatic place in the following year's Final. Unfortunately, normal service promptly resumed in 2004, with Blue Cafe's 'Love song' finishing an unimpressive 17th.

Taking part in the Semi Final in 2005, Ivan and Delfin gave a great performance of 'Czarna dziewczyna', but came a tantalising 11th - only 4 points separated them from Latvia, the tenth and final entry to make it into the Final. As a result, Poland must once again take part in the Semi Final in 2006.

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"After going down the internal selection route in 2005, Poland has reverted to a National Final (the Piosenka dla Europy) in 2006. Indeed, it had one of the most interesting lineups and best selection of songs of any National Final this year, with a number of really strong contenders among its fifteen finalists. In the end the favourite (and probably the best song) won, with Ich Troje securing a return ticket to Eurovision just three years after their last attempt. It was a close run thing, however, with Ich Troje's 'Follow my heart' picking up the support of the televoters, but ranking only as the sixth choice of the 'expert' jury. In the final reckoning, Ich Troje were therefore level on points with Katarzyna Cerekwicka's 'Na kolana' - a song that had attracted little attention prior to the Piosenka dla Europy - but won the day given that they had received the higher number of televotes.

The song itself is rather interesting, echoing Ich Troje's 2003 entry in employing a variety of languages, espousing a similar universal message of peace and love, and bringing together a veritable array of talent. As well as red-haired frontman Michał Wiśniewski and Jacek Łągwa, composer of many of the band's songs, the performance brings together all three of Ich Troje's female singers - the original singer Magda Pokora (aka Magda Femme, 1996-2000); her replacement Justyna Majkowska (2000-2003), who performed in Riga in 2003 but left shortly after); and most recent recruit Anna Świątczak (2003-). Added to the mix is the rapper Real McCoy, famous for a number of dance hits in the 1990s including 'Another night', 'Run away' and 'Love and devotion'. Based on the National Final performance, the danger of having quite so many featured performers on stage is that the whole thing ends up rather jumbled; after all, much of the visual impact of 'Keine grenzen' came from the lovely and simple interplay between Michał and Justyna. However, it IS a strong song, and there is plenty of time to work on the visual presentation prior to the Contest in Athens. "

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"This is a tricky one - will Ich Troje pull off a good performance in Athens, or is it all going to end up a bit of a mess with too many languages and too many singers? At the moment, my hunch is that it may be the latter, with Poland just missing out on a place in the Final for the second year in a row. "
