Best result: 1st (1971)

Making an overdue return in 2004, Monaco set a new record for the longest gap between entries (beating Malta's 16-year hiatus between 1975 and 1991, if I'm not mistaken), by showing up at Eurovision 25 years after its last attempt, in 1979. Ironically, the 1979 Monegasque entry was called 'Notre vie, c'est la musique' (Our life, it's music) - given the country's subsequent absence from the premier European festival of song, perhaps a more appropriate title would have been 'Notre vie ne sera plus la musique jusqu'à 2004'. During Monaco's previous run of 21 entries, the highlight was Sèverine's victory in 1971, with the beautiful 'Un banc, un arbre, une rue'. Unfortunately, 2004's rather old fashioned entry, 'Notre planète', suggested that another victory for Monaco might be some way off - taking part in the Semi Final, Maryon mustered just 10 points, though she would have undoubtedly gained an extra 12 from the French had they bothered to broadcast and vote in the Semi Final. Undeterred, Monaco came back for another go in 2005, Lise Darly's 'Tout de moi' picking up the expected rewards from France (10 points), as well as another 10 from those nice Andorrans, but still managing only a disappointing 24th place. Despite these setbacks, Monaco seems determined to soldier on, and will once again take part in the Semi Final in 2006. Hopefully Monaco will get a good result sometime soon, as the principality is genuinely an important part of Eurovision history - it would be a real shame if the Monegasques were to give up on Eurovision for a second time. However, it all depends on Monaco choosing the right song.

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"Monaco will be represented by Séverine Ferrer, singing 'La coco-dance' in a combination of French and Tahitian. The song is a rather joyous calypso-style ditty with a hint of Harry Belafonte meets Baccara - so just the kind of thing you would expect from the Principality of Monaco... Still, it certainly makes a nice change from the slightly stodgy and old-fashioned Monagasque entries of the last two years, and has the advantage of being quite different to anything else in the 2006 Contest. If Séverine can pull off an eyecatching and vocally strong performance she might yet come close to repeating her 1971 namesake's success."

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"I'm really not sure what to make of this song. It's horribly cutesy, yet there's something rather endearing and enjoyable about it. Séverine also has an Alizée-esque gamin charm that will appeal to many of the male televoters. For now I think it will do a little better than the two previous Monegasque entries, but not well enough to secure a place in the Final. However, it's a potential dark horse that could yet spring a surprise, depending on the strength or otherwise of Séverine's performance. "
