Moldova participated at Eurovision for the first time in 2005, becoming one of the last east European nations to do so. Needless to say, Moldova had to take part in the Semi Final along with the other newcomers, but it proved little obstacle to Zdob si Zdub and their song 'Bunica bate toba'. Presenting an enjoyable song unlike any other in the Contest, coupled with a memorable gimmick in the form of the drumming granny in a rocking chair, Moldova gained an impressive 2nd place in the Semi Final, before going on to finish 6th in the Final. With direct entry to the 2006 Final secured, Moldova will surely have to pull out all the stops to better its excellent début performance. Indeed, it is interesting to note that of the ten countries gaining direct entry to the 2005 Final on the strength of their 2004 result, only three - Greece, Malta and Serbia & Montenegro - managed to repeat that feat in 2005, and thus secure direct entry to the 2006 Final. Needless to say, Moldova will be hoping to avoid this recent curse of countries that follow up a successful result with a very disappointing one.

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"The Moldovan final was held on 25 February, but failed to produce a result after three acts (Geta Burlacu, Serj Kuzencoff and Moldstar) finished in equal first place. A new national final took place on 15 March, with only Serj choosing to take part for a second time. However, Moldova's ticket to Eurovsion was finally won by a song that hadn't featured in the original lineup, 'Loca' performed by former O-Zone singer Arsenium with Natalie Gordienko. It's quite good - not great, but good. The lyrics are rather daft though, seemingly trying to rhyme everything with 'loca' - Armenia's Andre still wins in the 'echoes of Ricky Martin' stakes though. "

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"The Moldovan entry is another one sitting near the bottom of the polls and with bookmakers' odds consistently rating its chances as 100-1 or longer. Again, there's nothing particularly bad about the song, but it certainly lacks the quirky appeal that brought Moldova such a great result in 2005. Being performed 2nd in the Final - the position from which no country has ever won Eurovision - would seem to be the last straw. Indeed, I suspect that Arsenium and his posse will be echoing Javine's (2005) and Tie Break's (2004) points tally as well as their position in the running order. "
