A tiny principality tucked between France and Spain in the Pyrenees, Andorra made its first ever appearance at Eurovision in 2004. As a new entrant, Andorra had to participate in the Semi Final; unfortunately, Marta Roure feel well short, only mustering 18th place in the Semi Final for her song 'Jugarem a estimar-nos'. Indeed, had it not been for 12 points from Spain, Andorra would have had the ignominy of scoring nothing at all.

Nevertheless, Andorra came back for another go in 2005, this time aiming to secure points from the Netherlands as well by sending the Dutch-born singer, Marian van de Wal. Her song, 'La mirada interieur', was very good, and benefited from a strong performance, but it was still not enough to secure more than 27 points and 23rd place, despite predictable support from the Spanish and Dutch televoters. On the plus side, it does mean that Andorra has at least achieved the feat of finishing higher than Monaco on both of its appearances so far - surely some consolation for having to take part in the Semi Final once again in 2006?

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"Abandoning the public vote that it used in both 2004 and 2005, Andorra has opted for an internal selection in 2006 with the result that Jenny will represent Andorra with the song 'Sense tu' ('Without you'). Described (quite accurately, as it turns out) as a cross between Sam Brown and Anastasia, Jenny maintains Andorra's 100% record in showcasing its homegrown talent, born in Catalonia (Spain) but currently working as a waitress in the Principality. With a population of just 64,000 this is quite an achievement - in all their years at Eurovision, other very small countries such as Monaco and Luxembourg have consistently imported performers from elsewhere, rather than using singers from within their own borders. In Andorra's case, its reliance on performers who are less experienced than many other Eurovision artists and its persistence on singing in its native Catalan have perhaps damaged the country's chances of success; on the other hand, it is to Andorra's credit that we have been able to enjoy some songs that genuinely embrace the music and culture of the country that they represent - Eurovision is much richer for the Andorran contribution.

2006 therefore follows the same formula, with another female soloist singing in Catalan, and a song once again written by Rafael Artesero, the composer of last year's 'La mirada interieur'. First impressions are pretty good - in its melody and vocal delivery 'Sense tu' starts off sounding rather like its predecessor, but the song then cranks up a gear, turning into a rather pleasing rock ballad of the kind that, well, Anastacia or Sam Brown might perform. It is a little repetitive, but at least it leaves you in no doubt by the end of the three minutes that you have been listening to a song called 'Sense tu', and Jenny's live vocal performance on the TV show to launch the song was excellent. As well as having an impressive singing talent Jenny is also a very striking woman, her publicity photos making her look like a cross between Alison Moyet and Roxie Hart from Chicago. As always, much will depend on the whole presentation of the song in Athens, but I would suggest that 'Sense tu' is the strongest Andorran entry to date, with at least a chance of making it out of the Semi Final. It's certainly one of my favourites this year, getting my 10 points in the Jury Vote 2006 (having given my 12 to Bulgaria). With 'Sense tu' also having a whiff of Anabel Conde's 'Vuelvo conmigo' (Spain 1995) about it - a song that was not highly fancied prior to the Contest, but finished 2nd thanks to an outstanding live performance - Andorra will certainly be hoping for similar success. "

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"Much as I loved Marian van de Wal's 'La mirada interieur' in 2005, I do think the Andorrans have come up with by far their strongest entry yet in the form of Jenny and 'Sense tu'. What a fantastic song it is, in the tradition of some of the great Eurovision entries from Spain or Italy, and all the better for being performed in its native language. It seems to be an annual tradition that Andorra's odds at the bookmakers hover around the 100-1 mark, and once again there seems little expectation this year that the country will make it through to the Final. However, I do think that if Jenny can give a really strong performance - and that's a big if - she has an outside chance of finishing in the top ten of the Semi Final. My hunch though is that she will probably end up in the low to mid teens instead. Hopefully I'll be wrong, as it's about time the Andorrans got some reward for their valiant and enthusiastic efforts."

In the run up to the Contest, 1,721 visitors to this site awarded points to their favourite songs in the Soult.com Eurovision Jury Vote 2006, voting as a representative of their own country's 'jury'.
