History (1956 to 2004)

Ukraine's previous appearances: 2 year(s) out of 49 [note]
Years participated: 2003- [note]
Best result: 1st (2004)

Ukraine has a short but eventful history at Eurovision, only entering for the first time in 2003 but winning the Contest on its second attempt in 2004. In 2003, Despite having a song written by Tzvika Pick (the man behind Dana International's 'Diva'), performed by the established Ukrainian artist, Olexandr Ponomaryov, and accompanied by dancing acrobats, 'Hasta la vista' managed a slightly disappointing 14th place. Perhaps Olexandr should have taken a leaf out of Dana's book, and worn a Jean Paul Gaultier dress instead of his luminous (and quite tight) white suit? As a result, Ukraine narrowly missed out on an automatic place in the 2004 Final, and had to participate in the Semi Final first. It hardly mattered, however... Ruslana's 'Wild Dances' breezed through the Semi Final before stomping to victory - with points from 34 of the 35 other countries - in the Final. In doing so, leather-clad Ruslana seemed to reinforce the experience of Sertab from the year before - that combining a great song with impressive choreography is the way to win Eurovision in this age of televoting.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: N/A
Position in Final draw: 16

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"After an interminable selection process stretching back to October, the Ukrainian national final became something of a farce when one of the wild cards - only given a place at the last minute - swept to victory ahead of artists who had spent the best part of six months competing. Of course, Greenjolly is no ordinary act, with their anthemic chant 'Razom nas bahato, nas nye podolaty' providing the soundtrack to December's Orange Revolution in Ukraine. With its blatantly political message and repeated references to Victor Yushchenko (the man later confirmed as the country's President in the Boxing Day rerun poll), drastic rewriting was required at the behest of the European Broadcasting Union. Nevertheless, the end result retains much of the impact of the original, with its universal message about "winning battles" and "staying undefeated". In its political resonance, 'Razom nas bahato' perhaps commands more popular support in its own country than any previous Eurovision entry. The danger, of course, is that its message might be lost on the rest of Europe."

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: N/A
My prediction for Final: 19th to 21st
See all my predictions for 2005

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"With odds of 50-1 and 33rd place out of 39 in the Soult.com Eurovision Poll 2005, the chances of Ukraine securing back-to-back victories appears slim indeed. Neighbouring Poland, where the song has already been a success, may well send some points Ukraine's way, but the rest of Europe is likely to be underwhelmed. Greenjolly won't finish bottom, but nor do I expect them to secure Ukraine's direct qualification to the 2006 Final - a placing in the mid to low teens would be my guess."

What actually happened...

Despite Greenjolly getting the biggest cheer of the night in the hall, Ukraine was never really likely to perform well with this song at Eurovision. Indeed, picking up just 30 points to finish in 20th place, most countries gave it a wide berth, with only five giving it any points at all. Those points from Poland, Moldova and Russia might have been predicted, though quite what Spain and Portugal found appealing about the song is less clear.

What the bookies thought...

Ukraine - graphic courtesy of CannySites.com Ukraine to win: 21/05/05 (prior to Final) 66-1
19/05/05 (after Semi Final) 50-1
19/05/05 (prior to Semi Final) 50-1
16/05/05 50-1
15/05/05 50-1
08/05/05 50-1
02/05/05 50-1
24/04/05 50-1

With odds of 66-1, little was expected of the Ukrainian entry, and so it proved.

(Odds quoted here were those offered by Coral.co.uk. 'F' indicates favourite, 'JF' joint favourite.)

I loved it. You know, keeping people in the spirit of the recent revolution there should be supported. And I voted for them. And it's a good song.
Singing is an important part of revolution for me (yes, you guessed right: I'm an Estonian).

Spain entry was just a bit of fun-lighten up, charlotte!

'Razom nas bahato' is a chant. it wasnt ment to be a 'song' song. It was used in a protest in the ukraine for some political reason.

From Charlotte, UNITED KINGDOM

PURE PANTS. What was it?? I wouldn't even call it a song, the WORST entry this contest, definitely (or Spain maybe!)

total bullsh*t, you never predicted Urkaine last year as the winner, you only questioned it!. you did however, on your home page predict Germany or Iceland as the possible winner....

[REPLY FROM GRAHAM: Can't argue with that! I said Ukraine was a 'possible winner' but yes, I thought Iceland or Germany would win when in fact neither did terribly well...]

From Stephanie, UNITED KINGDOM
Added 22:6:56 2005-5-18
Version 1 sucked, version 2 has grown on me! I guess they will do a lot better than people here may think. It's a great song :) but an unlikely winner.....4-8th? Well, I dared an each-way bet at odds 100-1 on them just now....!

From amy, UNITED KINGDOM
Added 11:40:5 2005-5-17
not a patch on Ruslana...

From David HJ, UNITED KINGDOM
Added 23:34:14 2005-5-16
This does not work for me at all - after last year's worthy winner, this is plodding and repetitive- and i think this will suffer with as rating of around 16th 0r 17th despite home ground polite votes.

From chiara d best , MALTA
Added 21:30:29 2005-5-14
Oh God help me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is the WORST song I've ever heard. My prediction is that your place is going to be : After the last. sry no chance 2 win. ;), Since u have no chance 2 win, VOTE 4 MALTA !!!
