History (1956 to 2004)

Switzerland's previous appearances: 45 year(s) out of 49 [note]
Years participated: 1956-1994; 1996-1998; 2000; 2002; 2004- [note]
Best result: 1st (1956, 1988)

Ah, Switzerland! The Swiss got off to a good start by winning the first ever contest in 1956, though with only 7 countries taking part it was a bit easier in those days. They then had to wait another 32 years, before the French Canadian Celine Dion, inexplicably singing for Switzerland, won it again in 1988 with 'Ne partez pas sans moi'. Celine's Eurovision performance, wearing a startlingly frilly white dress, is one of those moments that gets repeated on the various 'look at those ridiculous Eurovision outfits' programmes, though I doubt Celine minds too much - after all, she is probably the biggest international star to emerge from Eurovision since ABBA. Unhappily for Switzerland, subsequent success has eluded them, the best attempt being Annie Cotton's 3rd place in 1993. In the last decade, Switzerland's record has been nearly as bad as Finland's, participating in 94, 96, 97, 98 (nul points), 00 and 02, but missing 95, 99, 01 and 03 through relegation. As if this record of dismalness was inadequate humiliation, the Swiss plumbed new depths in 2004 by managing to score 'nul points' in the Semi Final, thus finishing 36th out of 36 entries. With so many countries taking part and voting in the Contest (including 33 voting in the 2004 Semi Final), finding a song that is so bad it gets no votes from any country is quite an impressive feat. However, that doesn't take into account the Swiss managing to find a singer as cheesy as Piero, or a song as horrific as 'Celebrate'. Looking on the bright side, at least Switzerland can only improve in 2005...

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 19
Position in Final draw: 22

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"It's hard to remember the last time that the Swiss had a Eurovision entry that sounded fresh and relevant - certainly not in 2004, and probably not for a decade, at least. However, enlisting the help of popular Estonian band Vanilla Ninja, the Swiss stand at least a reasonable chance of reaching the Final. 'Cool vibes' starts off sounding like a song from a musical, before morphing into a powerful, early-'90s style soft rock anthem. Vanilla Ninja seem to be excellent live performers, and the song makes a strong first impression, though the triteness of the lyrics - what exactly is a 'cool vibe'? - begins to manifest itself after repeated listens. Still, given that most viewers at home will only hear the song once, that may well not matter."

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 6th to 8th
My prediction for Final: Likely qualifier; 10th to 12th if it does
See all my predictions for 2005

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"Despite the limitations of 'Cool vibes', I would expect Vanilla Ninja to perform it with gusto, and for Switzerland to finish well within the top ten of the Semi Final. Once in the Final, I don't think the song has the spark that marks out a potential winner, but a solid result and direct qualification for the 2006 Final seems likely. If nothing else, Vanilla Ninja can surely count on getting 12 points from their Estonian compatriots."

What actually happened...

After a string of dismal results, it was rather nice to see Switzerland doing well for once, with 'Cool vibes' securing the country's first top ten (or even top fifteen) placing since 1993. Certainly, enlisting the talents of Estonian band Vanilla Ninja proved to be a canny move, with Switzerland benefiting from Estonia's 'douze points' in both the Semi Final and the Final. However, the song had significant appeal beyond Estonia as well, with Switzerland gaining 114 points and 8th place in the Semi Final, before going on to secure 128 points and another 8th place in the Final. Overall, I think part of the reason that 'Cool vibes' did so well was because it was unlike any of the other songs in this year's Contest - indeed, girl rock groups are a rare thing at Eurovision. It was also a strong song to start with, extremely well performed, with a great vocal, and a really effective visual presentation (the Ninjas, with their white outfits and guitars, forming a fantastic contrast with the deep red of the stage lighting and pyrotechic effects). In fact, I think the whole thing worked much better live on stage than in the slightly over-produced studio version. I just hope that Switzerland can keep up the excellent work in 2006, and avoids lapsing back into anything faintly resembling 'Celebrate'.

What the bookies thought...

Switzerland - graphic courtesy of CannySites.com Switzerland to win: 21/05/05 (prior to Final) 9-1
19/05/05 (after Semi Final) 8-1
19/05/05 (prior to Semi Final) 12-1
16/05/05 12-1
15/05/05 11-1
08/05/05 11-1
02/05/05 11-1
24/04/05 9-1

Securing a solid 8th place in both the Semi Final and the Final, 9-1 was a fair assessment of Vanilla Ninja's chances.

(Odds quoted here were those offered by Coral.co.uk. 'F' indicates favourite, 'JF' joint favourite.)

Hello from Brisbane, Australia.

Congratulations Girls,
You have done Estonia Proud.
Your were Fantastic!! I thought it would be a race between you and Chiara, with Angel.

" YOU WERE THE WHOLE PACKAGE". Looks, costumes, sound, stage presence, confidence, and a great song.

'We saw your face,
We say your looks,
We heard your voice,
And we were hooked"
(Marjon Oldenburg 25.05.2005)

You could not have been better, I was hoping against hope that you would win, even though you were competing for Switzerland.
What beautiful looking girls you all are!!!
I am sorry that you weren't singing for our homeland Estonia, though.
HOW ON EARTH COULD THE POWERS THAT BE IN ESTONIA, release you to Switzerland?????????????????
Sorry Switzerland, but surely you must have someone of your own, who could sing for you.

Vanilla Ninja, I also think that you would have scored more points if you had sung for Estonia and not Switzerland. I don't understand this rule, and wish it did not exist.
Greece did NOT HAVE the best song, and I was also disapointed with Estonia's Suntribe entry, it was clearly not a winner, as was yours.

Best wishes always,
looking forward to hearing from you, and seeing you perform again and win for Estonia.
ESTONIA HAS GREAT TALENT, don't sell yourselves short!
Love from all Estonians in Australia and around the world.
Marjon Oldenburg, Brisbane, Queensland, AUSTRALIA.
