2006 Contest: Big 4 - Directly qualified to Final

top of page top of page

History (1956 to 2004)

Spain's previous appearances: 44 year(s) out of 49 [note]
Years participated: 1961- [note]
Best result: 1st (1968, 1969)

Spain's level of success at Eurovision hardly befits its 'Big 4' status. It won the 1968 contest with the lyrically-challenged 'La La La' by Massiel, shared victory with three others in the infamous 1969 competition (the not very memorable 'Vivo cantando' by Salomé), and has avoided victory ever since. There have been a few close shaves - Mocadades' 'Eres tu', from 1973, is regarded as a Eurovision classic, but could only manage 2nd place, despite ending up as a massive worldwide hit. Further 2nds followed in 1979, with Betty Missiego's 'Su canción' natrrowly losing out to Israel's 'Hallelujah'; and in 1995 with the memorable 'Vuelve conmigo' by Anabel Condé. However, Spain struggled in the early years of televoting, and had to rely on its 'Big 4' status to avoid relegation - after finishing 16th in 1998, 23rd in 1999 and 18th in 2000, David Civera's 6th place in 2001 marked a welcome return to form. In 2002, Spain decided that a change of selection procedure was in order, and introduced the 'Operación Triunfo', Fame Academy-style format. Rosa's irritatingly upbeat 'Eu-ROPP's living a celebration' finished a very respectable 7th, while the same formula produced a solid 8th place for Beth's 'Dime' in 2003, and an unexpectedly high 10th place for Ramón in 2004. While the 'Operación Triunfo' format is yet to deliver a Spanish victory, it has at least seen an improvement in the country's Eurovision fortunes. Not that it really matters in qualification terms... as one of the 'Big 4', Spain has a guaranteed place in the Final anyway.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: N/A
Position in Final draw: 10

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"Alas, Spain has dispatched with the 'Operación Triunfo' format for 2005, so instead of an unknown soloist we have three unknown Spanish ladies, with jabbering vocals and lots of lovely dancing - it's Baccara meets Las Ketchup! Performed by three sisters known as Son de Sol, 'Brujería' is indeed remarkable in its similarity to The Ketchup Song. It also shares that song's inherent quality of quite obviously being rubbish at the same time as being very enjoyable and infectious rubbish."

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: N/A
My prediction for Final: 12th to 14th
See all my predictions for 2005

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"Guell from Puerto Rico was quite right when he suggested in his comment below that my silence on the Spanish song indicated that I "didn't know what to make of it". Honestly, I'm really not sure - it could bomb, or it could win; after all, The Ketchup Song (scarily) was a massive hit across Europe. My hunch is that enthusiasts for the song will probably be counterbalanced by those who despise it, resulting in Spain ending up mid-table. Added to my dire predictions of French and German prospects, the UK may at this rate be the only one of the Big 4 countries to qualify for the 2006 Final on its own merits - which would be a nice change, after recent experiences."

What actually happened...

Though I hadn't rated Spain's chances of doing well in Kiev, the Son de Sol's dismal 28 points and 21st place was nevertheless worse than I expected. On the positive side, Spain did manage to finish highest among the Big 4 countries, helped in no small way by the now customary 'douze points' from Andorra. For what it's worth, I thought that the song and performance really came across rather well, with the Son de Sol ladies giving us a vigorous and colourful show full of skirt swishing and bosom bouncing. To Spain's credit, the whole feel of the performance - the the music, the look, the language - also meant that the song sounded unmistakably from the country that it was representing, which is more than many Eurovision entries manage these days.

What the bookies thought...

Spain - graphic courtesy of CannySites.com Spain to win: 21/05/05 (prior to Final) 25-1
19/05/05 (after Semi Final) 25-1
19/05/05 (prior to Semi Final) 33-1
16/05/05 33-1
15/05/05 33-1
08/05/05 33-1
02/05/05 33-1
24/04/05 33-1

With quite reasonable odds of 25-1, the bookies failed to foresee that Spain would end up languishing in the bottom four.

(Odds quoted here were those offered by Coral.co.uk. 'F' indicates favourite, 'JF' joint favourite.)

I think the spanish performance have been fantastic. colour, rythm, nice voices and nice women. the 21th position is not a position for son de sol. IN my opinion Spain should have been in the top ten.

yes it is like Las Ketchup but without the melodic content of that song. The girls are cute so it may get points, but my guess is about 25th 0r 16th

This is a very likeable song that's fun and full of energy. The problem it faces though is that people are going to compare it with Las Ketchup, which was a better song.

From Guell, PUERTO RICO

Because of family ties with Spain, I'm always hopingt to see Spain win. But this year they are making it very difficult for me to support them. The song is catchy but it is simply not worthy enough for victory in Kiev. If it does win I will be very surprised.

Mr. Soult has been very silent about this one... maybe he doesn't know what to make of it.

I thought this song was ose of the best songs in this festival. It has a certain frangrance and rythm to it... and I like everybody who sings in their native language.

If it's not a winner, it should be at least top 2. :D

A very nice song (altough it is not original because it has the beat of the ketchup song) but still very nice.Good luck !!!!

A great, funny and enjoyable rythm. Very spanish too, I hope europe will not experience again the drama of 1983 and the fabulous then flamenco singer Remedios Amaya, who aung a very strong ethnic song-but at the time folklor was not at all in- and she came last with = points, the first time in history. What´s wrong with you Europeans, don´t you enjoy latin souls! good luck spain with your funny and catchy rythm1!!

From elena, GREECE
Added 14:5:47 2005-5-11
I love this song, i think it should win, there is something about it, bit I know it will get only a few points. Somehow Europeans do not seem to appreciate modern Spanish flavour. A pitty! I like it and good luck Spain!!!!!
