History (1956 to 2004)

Poland's previous appearances: 9 year(s) out of 49 [note]
Years participated: 1994-1999; 2001; 2003- [note]
Best result: 2nd (1994)

Finishing 2nd with Edyta Gorniak's wonderful 'To nie ja!' in 1994, Poland had a fantastic start to its Eurovision career but has been trying to live up to it ever since. The country finished a disappointing 18th in 1995, 15th in 1996, 11th in 1997, 17th in 1998 and 18th in 1999, before having to miss 2000's contest due to its poor five-year average. Its return in 2001 was barely worth the effort, finishing a new low of 20th and being relegated again. Happily, 2003's contest proved much more fruitful, with Ich Troje and 'Keine grenzen - zadnych granic' finishing a very respectable 7th. Cannily, to appeal to as many countries as possible, the song was performed in a mix of Polish, German and Russian - Germany rewarded it with its 12 points, but Russia was unimpressed and gave it no points at all. It was a beautiful song, and with one of the best performances at the 2003 contest it really deserved to finish higher; nevertheless, 7th was quite enough to give Poland an automatic place in the following year's Final. Unfortunately, normal service promptly resumed in 2004, with Blue Cafe's 'Love song' finishing an unimpressive 17th and meaning that Poland must face the Semi Final in 2005.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 25
Position in Final draw: Failed to qualify

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"Performed by Ivan and Delfin, 'Czarna dziewczyna' (The black-haired girl) was chosen via an internal selection, and is described as "an up-tempo and catchy song with Gypsy elements, sung in Polish and Ukrainian". It certainly is all those things - it's also very repetitive (much of the song is 'lai lai lai lai' repeated over and over), but strangely addictive. I'm just not quite sure what to make of it all... Do I like it? I think so... Will it win Eurovision? Probably not..."

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 8th to 10th
My prediction for Final: Likely qualifier; 14th to 16th if it does
See all my predictions for 2005

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"Prior to the Semi Final draw I was thinking that the Polish entry might get lost among the crowd. However, being performed last may well see it sneak through, even if - like last year's Dutch entry - it comes unstuck in the Final. Still, I can't help feeling the bookies' odds of 100-1, as well as the unenthusiastic response of Soult.com Eurovision visitors (36th out of 39 in the Poll 2005), drastically underestimate its potential."

What actually happened...

A great vocal, a fabulous visual presentation, a flash of chest, and the advantage of performing last in the Semi Final - what more could anyone ask for? Well, a few more points, as it turned out. Despite putting on a great show, Poland suffered the frustration of finishing with 81 points and 11th place in the Semi Final, just 4 points behind Latvia (the tenth and final qualifier). I do feel that Poland deserved to qualify, though it's hard to argue against the ten that did make it - though I didn't rate Denmark or Croatia they both qualified fair and square, but I do find it hard to accept that Martin Vucic's Macedonian entry was more deserving than Ivan and Delfin.

What the bookies thought...

Poland - graphic courtesy of CannySites.com Poland to win: 21/05/05 (prior to Final) -
19/05/05 (after Semi Final) -
19/05/05 (prior to Semi Final) 100-1
16/05/05 100-1
15/05/05 100-1
08/05/05 100-1
02/05/05 100-1
24/04/05 66-1

With Poland only narrowly missing out on a place in the Final, my bet on them qualifying almost had a positive outcome. Nevertheless, 11th place was still better than the bookies' odds of 100-1 had implied.

(Odds quoted here were those offered by Coral.co.uk. 'F' indicates favourite, 'JF' joint favourite.)

IvanekiDelfin Should Have Chosen Some Other Song In Chance Of Winning, I Don't Really Like This Song Because It Will Not Stand Out In Front Of The Crowd. IchTroje Would Have A Better Chance Of Winning.

I think the song could be alot better. Ivan and Delfin had better songs, why did he chose this one?

that song is really stupid! we really have better singers but the people who were choosing artist for eurovision were only 3 old women and 1 normal guy who didn't like ivan&delfin! but they didn't listen to him and that's the worse! in our country we have word for owful things or persons it's "wieœniackie"! but we shouldn't shame on us because ivan is from russia!

Certainly neighbour's attitudes with what they would not be remain neighbour's. I very much love Poland, its culture and magnificent Polish people. I know, that they do music with soul. Therefore I shall be glad to arrive per 2006 on the Eurovision to Warsaw! Success Poland 12 points from Belarus always with you!:))

From Daniel, POLAND

:D This song is a grand fiasko for Poland with so many talented singers ! We should be ashamed of not bringing anything better to Europe. We are sorry !

From Sébastien, FRANCE
Added 15:2:15 2005-5-11
A disaster from POLAND! I hope the Polish singers won't catch a flight to KIEV to attend to the semi-final lol! To be really honest : I hate the song, I hate the costumes and I hate the singers.
Regarding ITALY, you can't criticize that ITALY decided to stop participating after the ESC 1997. ITALY has the San Remo Festival which quality is often better than the Eurovision one. Amici Italiani, vi amo. Forza ITALIA ! E spero che fra poco l'ITALIA tornerà all'Eurovisione.

I love this song, iI think it deserves more attention from the public, i think it is an outsider who could finally make the suprise and win. My secret tip for the winner. Good luck Poland, we like you anyway!

Well it will certainly will get the votes from Central Europe and maybe some from Eastern Europe.

I find this tune very tiring, but hey...not everybody is expected to like it.

Good Luck anyway Poland

Are they going to put a cap on the edge of the stage and invite the audience to throw in their spare change? Hope so, as they won't get many votes.
