History (1956 to 2004)

Monaco's previous appearances: 22 year(s) out of 49 [note]
Years participated: 1959-1979; 2004- [note]
Best result: 1st (1971)

Making an overdue return in 2004, Monaco set a new record for the longest gap between entries (beating Malta's 16-year hiatus between 1975 and 1991, if I'm not mistaken), by showing up at Eurovision 25 years after its last attempt, in 1979. Ironically, the 1979 Monegasque entry was called 'Notre vie, c'est la musique' (Our life, it's music) - given the country's subsequent absence from the premier European festival of song, perhaps a more appropriate title would have been 'Notre vie ne sera plus la musique jusqu'à 2004'. During Monaco's previous run of 21 entries, the highlight was Sèverine's victory in 1971, with the beautiful 'Un banc, un arbre, une rue'. Unfortunately, 2004's rather old fashioned entry, 'Notre planète', suggested that another victory for Monaco might be some way off - taking part in the Semi Final, Maryon mustered just 10 points, though she would have undoubtedly gained an extra 12 from the French had they bothered to broadcast and vote in the Semi Final. Undeterred, Monaco is back for another go in 2005, safe in the knowledge that new EBU rules require all participating countries to broadcast and vote in both the Semi Final and Final - so it looks like those 12 points from France are in the bag at least.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 6
Position in Final draw: Failed to qualify

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"With an old-fashioned French ballad to follow up last year's old-fashioned French ballad, you do have to wonder whether Monaco has slept through its 25 year absence and still thinks it's 1979. To be fair, Singer Lise Darly has a pretty voice, and 'Tout de moi' is at least an improvement on last year's slightly grating effort. However, the presence of a full orchestral backing cannot disguise the song's limitations - it builds to what is supposedly a rousing finale, but ends up not really going anywhere, the result being a song that is bombastic almost to the point of self-parody. It's pleasant enough, but it's difficult to see anyone voting for it ahead of 24 other entries."

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 21st to 23rd
My prediction for Final: Will not qualify
See all my predictions for 2005

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"Reports from the rehearsals have been impressed with Lise's performance, and would have us believe that Monaco's entry has a good chance of qualifying for the Final - however, I'm far from convinced, as are the Soult.com Eurovision visitors who rank it 39th out of 39 in the Poll 2005. Monaco may get 12 points from the French, if they haven't already lavished their maximum points on the Belgian entry, but I will be amazed if 'Tout de moi' comes anywhere near qualifying. It's nice - but nothing more."

Final Poll Ranking: out of 39 ()
(Updated 22 May 2005; change refers to movement over final week)

In the run up to the Contest, 27,998 visitors to this site voted for their favourite song in the Soult.com Eurovision Poll (up from 5,000 in 2004!)

What actually happened...

Lise looked stunning in a red and pink flowerly frock, and undoubtedly gave one of the strongest vocal performances of the evening. Sadly, the song let her down - despite Lise doing the best she possibly could with it, 'Tout de moi' just sounded more Eurovision 1985 than Eurovision 2005. Though 22 points was an improvement on 2004, this was mostly thanks to 10 from France, who would certainly have given Monaco points in 2004 if they had bothered to broadcast and vote in the Semi Final. Nevertheless, 22 points still meant that Monaco finished last but one in 24th, slightly worse than my prediction of 21st to 23rd.

What the bookies thought...

Monaco - graphic courtesy of CannySites.com Monaco to win: 21/05/05 (prior to Final) -
19/05/05 (after Semi Final) -
19/05/05 (prior to Semi Final) 66-1
16/05/05 66-1
15/05/05 66-1
08/05/05 66-1
02/05/05 66-1
24/04/05 66-1

Unfortunately for Monaco, the only surprise was that the bookies were rating Lise's chances as high as 66-1.

it's OK i suppose - another Euro ballad from the 70's - well sung and performed and no chance of doing well in Eurovision - for a start it won't qualify - in 1970 it would have won !!!!

MONACO: I absolutely adore this song and it would be lovely to see it in the final as it would be respite from all the "samey" dance tracks. Also she is exceptionally beautiful and that goes a long way to qualifying for the final!! Definitely a song that would have stormed the voting a few years ago. I wish her lots of luck and will have my fingers and toes crossed on the 19th - especially as I have betting odds of 200-1 :-)

MONACO has no chance to access the final with such a sugary song! I hope our neighbours will make a better choice for the ESC 2006...

Maybe eurovision nowadays is the wrong stage for this song: it could fit well thoug in a waltdisney movie. this song is a mixture of the soundtrack of pocahontas, alladin and the beauty and the beast. but still, with some good lightning, a pretty dress and big innocent eyes of the singer it can be quite convincing. I do like this song a lot. So Monaco: good luck! I cross my fingers for this song!!And I hope you get many points because that would stop the balkan-folk-oriental- flintstone-era we entered the past years. So maybe next year in Monaco and than all songs can be blessed again with the return of a live orchestra from Monaco!!
