History (1956 to 2004)

Moldova's previous appearances: 0 year(s) out of 49 [note]
Years participated: None [note]
Best result: N/A

Moldova participates at Eurovision for the first time in 2005, becoming one of the last east European nations to do so - with Bulgaria also joining the fray in 2005, only the Czech Republic is yet to make an appearance. Needless to say, Moldova must take part in the Semi Final along with the other newcomers.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 4
Position in Final draw: 7

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"Moldova seems to be going after the same audience who propelled Turkey's Athena to 4th place in 2004, sending the all-male band Zdob si Zdub with an entry that is noisy, incomprehensible, but extremely enjoyable. The song is really quite bewildering - its title 'Boonika bate toba' apparently translates as 'Grandmamma beats da drum-a', with lyrics that include 'Grandma hits the drum, Grandma hits it hard, Grandma with a beetle hits the drum in “da house”!' Even the group's website is bizarre, with lots of sheep everywhere - I'm not sure what's meant to be going on there. It's all completely mad, but there's certainly something very refreshing about a song that defies pigeonholing - it's not pop, it's not really ethnic, and it's certainly not a ballad. Moldova should be commended for kicking off its Eurovision record with such a bold and interesting entry - it deserves to do well, and I suspect it might well do so..."

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 5th to 7th
My prediction for Final: Possible qualifier; 7th to 9th if it does
See all my predictions for 2005

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"The Moldovan song will not appeal to everyone, but it is something memorable, not least because 'Grandmamma' is due to appear on stage playing the drums. It may well also benefit from being sandwiched between the completely different Portuguese and Latvian entries. Judging from the comments on this page, the Moldovans certainly seem excited about their first Eurovision entry, and rightly so - qualification to the Final must be on the cards, despite the surprisingly low odds of 50-1 on Moldova winning the Contest."

What actually happened...

Well, Moldova certainly ticked all the right boxes with their Semi Final performance - presenting an enjoyable song unlike any other in the Contest, coupled with a memorable gimmick in the form of the drumming granny in a rocking chair. Overall, a performance that was difficult not to like, and deserving of its impressive 2nd place.

A review of the Final performance will appear here later.

Finishing 6th in the Final, Moldova can be well pleased with its Eurovision début, securing the country direct entry to the 2006 Final. As for my prediction, it was one of the better ones - very narrowly underestimating Moldova's position in both the Semi Final and Final, and thus being 'close' rather than 'wrong'.

What the bookies thought...

Moldova - graphic courtesy of CannySites.com Moldova to win: 21/05/05 (prior to Final) 20-1
19/05/05 (after Semi Final) 50-1
19/05/05 (prior to Semi Final) 50-1
16/05/05 50-1
15/05/05 50-1
08/05/05 50-1
02/05/05 50-1
24/04/05 66-1

Moldova's odds were slashed following its success in reaching the Final - and rightly so, as 'Bunica bate toba' was a song that was always likely to do better than odds of 50-1 had implied.

(Odds quoted here were those offered by Coral.co.uk. 'F' indicates favourite, 'JF' joint favourite.)

I loved your song, Moldova, but I can't believe you think everybody voted geopolitically, when you guys yourselves did so. I loved your song, but I think Romania had a better song, and that the 7 you voted was unfair, when we gave you a 12.

I've read all the messages so far and I have to say 2 things:
1) Zdob si Zdub really made a blast on the contest - waking everybody up after lousy performaces by other "disco and pop" artists (no offence to pop lovers);
2) People that do not know where Moldova is - pls begin studying geography or get a map (P.S. Moldova is between Ukraine and Romania)

From KidRock, LATVIA

Bravo, Zdubii!
Bunika was the most sexy girl in this contest :))
We are proud of you guys. You proved that Moldova has some good music, and Europe lost much by not inviting sooner us to this competition.
Bunika bate doba, bunika bate tare and the whole country is with her.
Proud to be Moldavian!!!
