2006 Contest: Must compete in Semi Final

History (1956 to 2004)

Macedonia (FYR)'s previous appearances: 4 year(s) out of 49 [note]
Years participated: 1998; 2000; 2002; 2004- [note]
Best result: 14th (2004)

Macedonia has only appeared four times before, but has not had a very strong start to its Eurovision career. Indeed, its first attempt at Eurovision participation - 1996's 'Samo ti' by the splendidly monickered Kaliopi Gril - ended in failure when the song failed to get through the qualifying round for that year's Contest in Oslo. Finally getting a chance to appear at Eurovision proper in 1998, Macedonia finished 19th; with a subsequent 15th place in 2000 and 19th again in 2002, the country managed to get relegated on every occasion. However, 2004 represented a new high for Macedonia - sneaking into the Final (having finished 10th in the Semi), Tose Proeski's 14th place with 'Life is a book' was not enough to secure direct qualification to the 2005 Final, but at least gave his country its best result yet.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 17
Position in Final draw: 15

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"Macedonia is sending Martin Vucic to Eurovision, but not without controversy - he secured victory thanks to the votes of the studio audience and professional jury, despite the televoters overwhelmingly favouring his competitor Aleksandra Pileva's rather raucous 'Sonce i mesecina'. Martin is easy on the eye, and his song 'Make my day' is fresh and modern, if a bit on the repetitive side, and with a rather limp Sakis-style vocal."

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 13th to 15th
My prediction for Final: Unlikely to qualify
See all my predictions for 2005

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"Unless Martin gives an outstanding live performance, I think the Macedonian entry may miss out on a place in the Final - it's good, but not good enough. Certainly, the bookies' odds of 80-1 do not bode well, though they seem a little on the pessimistic side, while Martin's 14th place in the Soult.com Eurovision Poll 2005 would see him narrowly qualify for the Final. I can't see it happening, though."

What actually happened...

Well, it wasn't just me who was surprised when Macedonia once again qualified for the Final, with many a raised eyebrow at Martin finishing in the top ten of the Semi Final while much more highly fancied songs from Belarus, Iceland and the Netherlands all failed to make the cut. Looking at the breakdown of its 97 points, it is clear that Macedonia did disproportionately well from its Balkan neighbours, with 12s from Albania and Croatia, and 10s from Bosnia, Bulgaria, Serbia & Montenegro and Turkey. On the other hand, 'Make my day' also picked up points from less predictable sources, including 3 each from Monaco and the Netherlands, 4 from Austria and 8 from Switzerland, and would therefore not have made the top ten on the basis of neighbourly votes alone. Credit to Martin, his vocal performance in both the Semi Final and the Final wasn't bad at all, and the song came across as jolly but unremarkable. Meanwhile, a lost-looking bespectacled man at the back appeared to have wandered onto the stage by mistake, or perhaps he was an undercover detective seeking to arrest Martin for crimes against dancing. Unfortunately, the song's limitations were more exposed in the Final, where its 52 points and 17th place ranked Macedonia last among the Semi Final qualifiers. This slump means that Macedonia must take part in the Semi Final for the third successive year in 2006, despite managing to qualify for the Final on both occasions so far.

Macedonia (FYR) - graphic courtesy of CannySites.com Macedonia (FYR) to win: 21/05/05 (prior to Final) 50-1
19/05/05 (after Semi Final) 50-1

08/05/05 80-1
02/05/05 80-1

Not a lot to say really - 50-1 was about right.

'Make My Day' was amazing. It made my day. It is really good in Macedonian too and Martin is a very talented performer (as well as being very handsom). I have heard a few clips of some of his other songs but can't buy them in the UK. Does anyone know how I could get hold of his albums? He should have won Eurovision, I voted for him.

REPLY FROM GRAHAM: There seems to be a good range of ex-YU music at BOF (http://www.bof.si/audiovideo.cp2?guid=A4CBCD7B-BCDB-DAA3-E7D9-0494FDBDD9A2&linkid=16). Any other suggestions anyone?

Martin Vučić

Martin was born on 7 August 1982 in Skopje, FYR Macedonia. Grandson of the late Pece Atanasoski, one of the world’s most famous bagpipe players, Martin quickly showed that he had inherited the same passion for music.

His first contact with music was at the age of three when he started to play the drums. He first performed in front of an audience at a concert by the popular Macedonian group ‘Tavce Gravce’. As a seven-year old he landed a part in a children’s festival for new music called ‘Pletenka’. As a solo artist he won second prize. He continued his education in a primary school for music, graduating with honours. In the meantime he joined the youth theatre playing a role in the show ‘Memories in The Night’ by Bonjo Lungov.

At secondary school he was a member of the percussion section. It was during this period that he became a drummer for the group ‘Arija’ – he first began to compose music as part of this group. He went on to enter the Music Academy as an extremely popular percussionist. Martin then started his solo carrier as a vocalist. He received numerous prizes and excellent reviews.

Martin is currently a senior at the Music Academy in Skopje, and one of the most popularly rated artistes on the FYR Macedonian and Balkan music scene.

His achievements so far:
With the song ‘Rano mi e da se vrzam’ at ‘Ohrid fest’ he won second place, the same song was the 'Most Popular Song of the Year 2002' in the Republic of Macedonia.
At the Budva 2002 festival (Serbia and Montenegro) he won the prize awarded by journalists and critics.
He was 'Discovery of the Year 2002' in Serbia and Montenegro, winning an album contract with BK Sound.
He was also 'Discovery of the Year 2002' in FYR Macedonia.
He won the Interpretation Award at 'Mak fest' for the song ‘Harem’.
He won the Journalists’ 'Award for Most Successful Song' at the International festival in Zrenjanin (S&MN).
He was a Grand Prix winner at Ohrid fest 2003.
In 2003 he came 3rd in the ‘International Evening’.
He won 2nd place in the International Festival in Banja Luka B&H in 2003.
He came 3rd at a major festival in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
He came second at the International Percussion Contest in Sofia (Bulgaria), performing with his class from the music academy.
He won a Grand Prix at the Radiski Festival in Zenica (B&H) 2004.
He was 'Singer of the Year 2004' in FYR Macedonia and also won 'Duet of the Year'.
He has been invited to appear on one of Turkey’s most popular TV shows. In Turkey he is known as ‘Macedonian Tarkan’.
He has been selected as an exclusive star for CITY RECORDS.
In 2004 he produced his second album, ‘MUZA’.
And of course he will be representing his country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 with the song ‘Make My Day’

martin vucic ROCKS, he sure did better than most of the other singers competeing! i can't believe he didn't rank higher!!! i prefer the song in macedonian though, it lost its meaning when it was translated. vilma he is GORGEOUS, no diet required :D marion he may not have a clue how to dance but he CAN sing, let's not comment on the german qualifiers now, if you know what i mean ;) oh and to all the people writing FYROM ... it's actually MACEDONIA :)
