History (1956 to 2004)

Lithuania's previous appearances: 5 year(s) out of 49 [note]
Years participated: 1994;1999; 2001-2002; 2004- [note]
Best result: 13th (2001)

Lithuania must be wondering what it's doing wrong. While its Baltic neighbours Estonia and Latvia have each carried off a Eurovision victory (in 2001 and 2002 respectively), Lithuania's record in the contest is rather less impressive. Indeed, it hardly got off to a good start, with Lithuania's first entry in 1994, performed by Ovidijus Vysniauskas, scoring 'nul points'. Perhaps wisely, Lithuania waited until 1999 before trying again, when it gained 13 points, 20th place (out of 23) and relegation for its efforts. 2001 represented Lithuania's best performance so far, when Skamp managed a more 'impressive' 13th place with 'You Got Style'. More importantly, it meant that Lithuania finally scored highly enough to participate in the following year's contest; however, it was back to business as usual with Aivaras' 'Happy You' mustering just 12 points and 23rd place in 2002. Having had to sit out 2003, the new format of Semi Final and Final, introduced in 2004, at least means that Lithuania can take part every year. However, given the country's past record, and with Linas and Simona mustering just 26 points and 16th place in 2004's Semi Final, the chances of Lithuania ever reaching the Final don't seem good...

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 2
Position in Final draw: Failed to qualify

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"...on the other hand, maybe there's hope! Seemingly giving up on its own talent, Lithuania has plumped for 'Little by little', written by a Swedish songwriting team and performed by Laura & The Lovers. A good pop song with a memorable chorus, it is quite possibly Lithuania's strongest ever entry, even if it does sound more like the Swedish entry than the Swedish entry itself. Being Lithuania's strongest contribution to Eurovision is hardly a great achievement, but the country has at least managed to come up with a song that stands a chance of reaching the Final, and possibly even doing quite well. However, like so many Swedish songs, I just can't help feeling it lacks soul - it's all a bit sterile somehow."

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 10th to 12th
My prediction for Final: Unlikely to qualify
See all my predictions for 2005

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"The Lithuanians swamping the Soult.com Eurovision Poll would have us believe that this is going to win the whole Contest. However, Lithuania has drawn the dreaded second position in the Semi Final draw - a spot from from which no country has ever won, and pre-Contest favourites seem to flounder. While 'Little by little' is a good song, I'm unconvinced about how well it will stand out from the crowd - it will offend no-one, yet may not inspire people to actively vote for it. Echoing the bookies (odds of 40-1 at Coral on a Lithuanian victory) my prediction is that Lithuania may narrowly miss out on a place in the Final, just because there are other songs that are stronger and more memorable. It could well be a close run thing, though."

Final Poll Ranking: out of 39 ()

What actually happened...

Well, so much for the 'narrowly' missing out on a place in the Final. Falling victim to the curse of performing second - the spot from which no country has ever won Eurovision - Lithuania ended up coming last, in 25th place, with 17 points. 'Little by little' was evidently popular in the British Isles, securing 5 from Ireland and 4 from the UK, but the rest of Europe (apart from the 8 points awarded by neighbours Latvia), gave the Lithuanian song a wide berth. There was little particularly offensive about the Lithuanian performance, other than Laura's off-key vocal and scary lilac eye shadow. However, nor was there a compelling reason for European voters to love Laura and her Lovers.

What the bookies thought...

Lithuania - graphic courtesy of CannySites.com Lithuania to win: 21/05/05 (prior to Final) -
19/05/05 (after Semi Final) -
19/05/05 (prior to Semi Final) 40-1
16/05/05 40-1
15/05/05 40-1
08/05/05 40-1
02/05/05 40-1
24/04/05 20-1

The bookies thought Laura and the Lovers would bomb, the Lithuanians voting en masse in the Soult.com Eurovision Poll thought they would win. Unfortunately for 'Little by little', the bookies were right.

(Odds quoted here were those offered by Coral.co.uk. 'F' indicates favourite, 'JF' joint favourite.)

Hm...I don't understand, Alanas in lithuanian Eurovizion final , was the best, but not the Laura, she has a good voice, but in scene she is very shy...that's bad...so..Maybe she isn't profesional ARTIST, not singer, because her voice is very good, but ..Hm...strange..2nd number in Semi-Final was bad to..I think that maybe 10 years later Lithuania will be a capital of Eurovision :)))

hah. i didn`t expected that laura will get to final. song... hmm.. horrible. laura beautiful, but her outfit... OH MY GOD. laura, the dress you wore through national final was better. i also think, that there were better songs in national final and I just don`t undestand, why laura won. some performances like Saules Kliosas or vilija Mataciunaite were better and more original. however, laura, we are with you and we were woth you. and some of us hope, that you will never try your luck in eurovision agai.
Lithuania is basketboll country, not music. `D

well, lithuanians have a tradition in destroying their best songs with awful dresses. the same happened with 'you got style' back in 2001. of course that's not the only reason. also, the 2nd place in the order of appearance is the worst place to perform...

From amp, LITHUANIA
Added 17:55:12 2005-5-30
Well, I can't say that Lithuania had the best song but Laura really wasn't the worst performer in this contest... She should have been in the top 10, because her show wasn't so bad indeed... Maby she just didn't have enough confidence in herself... It's a pity, that Lithuania didn't qualify... Maby next year... :)

From samus, LITHUANIA
Added 18:53:42 2005-5-29
i think that people r idiots.whats the point talking about why laura didnt win, even though that her performence was the best in lt history she lost and thats final.like its sayd..........your good but someone is better.

From BlackBoUnTy, LITHUANIA

It is not fair!!!i think that in semi-final Top 10 were worst songs than Lithuania!!!i think we can invite to represent our song in Eurovision Whitney Houston but we will be the last!!!because Europe hate lithuanians!! :/
What we have to do that you will love us!?there aren't all felonry in Lithuania.there are so many very good people..and this country is very beautiful.then whay you hate us so hard? :(

From Matthew, UNITED KINGDOM

I have to admit I thought Lithuania's song was one of the best but it wasn't catchy enough for three minutes. And it alike the UK had the dreaded song number 2 position

Like always we are the worsed. Our songs are good but not so good that we can be winners or go to eurovision final.I think that Artas is realy good singer so he can go to eurovision...But not that Laura.
