History (1956 to 2004)

Hungary's previous appearances: 4 year(s) out of 49
Years participated: 1994-1998
Best result: 4th (1994)
Making its début in 1994, Hungary made an excellent first impression with the lovely 'Kinek mondjam el vetkeimet', performed by Friderika and finishing a deserved 4th. Subsequent efforts were less successful - 22nd in 1995, ejected in the preliminary qualifier in 1996, 12th in 1997and 23rd in 1998 - causing the country to disappear and not come back. 2005 marks Hungary's welcome return after a seven-year gap; effectively a newcomer, the country must join the other newbies (Bulgaria and Moldova) in the Semi Final.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 15
Position in Final draw: 1
What I said prior to the Semi Final: "Ooh, potential winner alert! Hungary achieved an excellent 4th place on its first appearance in 1994, but don't be surprised if it does even better on its 2005 comeback. Performed by the group NOX, fronted by 22-year-old Szilvia Péter Szabó (left) and 29-year-old Tamés Nagy (right), 'Forogj világ' is wonderful stuff - combining elements of pop, rock and folk, comparisons with other Eurovision favourites are inevitable but justified - Esctoday hits the nail on the head when it describes the song as "NOX meets Ruslana, meets Urban Trad, meets Riverdance", and could probably add Željko Joksimović (Serbia & Montenegro, 2004) to the list for good measure. However, the overall result is much more than the sum of its parts, managing to be catchy at the same time as beautiful - Szilvia realy has a lovely voice - with a quite unique quality. With an entry as good as this, Hungary's return is truly welcome."

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 1st to 3rd
My prediction for Final: Definite qualifier; 1st to 3rd, possible winner
What I predicted prior to the Semi Final: "Hungary's entry ticks all the Eurovision boxes, while avoiding being a straight copy of anything we have seen before. With what promises to be a strong visual and vocal performance, I would be very surprised if 'Forogj világ' is not among the top few finishers in the Semi Final, with a top five place in the Final surely on the cards. The bookies would seem to agree - Coral rate Hungary's chances of winning the Contest as 11-2, placing it third only to Greece and Norway, while (the slightly less enthusiastic) Soult.com Eurovision visitors have Hungary at 15th in the Poll 2005, but still good enough to each the Final."

What you thought...

Final Poll Ranking: out of 39 ()
(Updated 22 May 2005; change refers to movement over final week)
In the run up to the Contest, 27,998 visitors to this site voted for their favourite song in the Soult.com Eurovision Poll (up from 5,000 in 2004!)

What actually happened...

It looked fantastic, but sounded, well, not quite as fantastic. I think a blow par vocal performance affected Hungary's chances in both the Semi Final and the Final - a result in the Final of 12th place and 97 points was no disgrace, but with a strong vocal I think that this could have been a real contender. Still, in my eyes it remains a very strong Eurovision song - just one that I'll listen to from the CD instead of from the live performance.

What the bookies thought...

 | Hungary to win: | 21/05/05 (prior to Final) | 7-1 |
| | 19/05/05 (after Semi Final) | 7-1 |
| | 19/05/05 (prior to Semi Final) | 11-2 |
| | 16/05/05 | 5-1 |
| | 15/05/05 | 11-2 |
| | 08/05/05 | 5-1 |
| | 02/05/05 | 6-1 |
| | 24/04/05 | 10-1 |
|
|
Rated as highly as 5-1 prior to the Semi Final and Final, Hungary's slightly disappointing 12th place failed to live up to the bookies' expectations.

One thing that always infuriates me is when people say "Ooh, it's like Riverdance" or "Oh look, they've copied Riverdance" every time they see a group of men performing lively folkdancing. I was especially infuriated to find this entry was greeted with such comments, as the choreography was clearly and unmistakeably based on traditional gypsy dance, rather than the culturally deficient drivel that was released upon the world in Millstreet in 1993. Can we all please please PLEASE just get over Riverdance, love it for what it is and accept the fact that not all folkdancing in the world is in some way an attempt to copy it. This rather excellent Hungarian entry deserves no such insulting comparisons, and yes, 12th place was an unfair result, though it is difficult to pick a song from the eventual top ten that deserved to be 12th instead. It won't be too long before we see a Hungarian win though, if they maintain this standard in years to come.

Dear Berliner, LITHUANIA! I think you are ignorant about hungarian music, b/c it was not a copy of Ruslana. It was a really Hungarian song so you are stupid a little about that.

Fantastic song that deserved top ten at least. It was a big risk though entering a folk song when up against a load of pop but they still done well and at least it wasn't a humiliating disaster!

Well, to tell the truth, I don't exactly know, but you have better songs than this was. But this song was OK.
In my opinion, the biggest problem is the voting system, it is not fair at all.
For example the role says that 6 person can be on the stage at the same time - as you told - and your group is much bigger. And I saw at least 10 person on the stages when the (great and loved) Greek song appeard.

Terrible. A poor copy of Ruslana. Your vocal was terrible also. I still can't understand how did you qualify? It was an absolute rubbish. Eurovision is a song contest, not a dance one. And all I could see in your performance was a Ruslana-like dance.

as i read all these comments,i really CANNOT understand such bitternesss!hungary was good.i liked the song.but helena was awesome!and if our winning was due to politics we would have won many years ago and not wait 31 years.so,please get over it and if you don't like GREECE then you should not visit ATHENS 2006.

I am very proud and sad in the same time. Proud, because Nox's performance was excellent and they could give a taste of our folk music to other nations. Sad, because they got for all of this the 12th place. I respect them too because they had enough courage to sing in their native language (like Croatia, Serbia-Montenegro, Turkey, Moldova, France). I am very happy that lots of people are interested in their music and I hope they will be well-known in abroad too like Marta Sebestyén who sang a hungarian folk song for an american film (The English Patient with Ralph Phines).Did you know that Queen (the group) sang too a hungarian folk song? /they learnt it when they were in Hungary and they recorded it. so you can listen to it on one of their albums. The title of the song: Tavaszi szél vizet áraszt/ I have heard about this from a real English Queen fan who knows this song.

YOU WERE THE BEST, YOU ARE THE BEST. I KNEW THAT I WOULD VOTE FOR YOU FROM THE EUROVISION PREVIEW PRESENTED ON OUR PUBLIC TV A WEEK BEFORE THE CONTEST. MOLDOVA DID NOT GIVE YOU ANY POINT. IT IS NOT KNOWN YET ANYTING ABOUT THE METHOD OF VOTES GIVEN BY MOLDOVA - IT IS NOT CLEAR IF THERE WERE THE VOTES OF TV-VOTERS OR THE COMISSION'S ONES (IT IS ABOUT MOLDOVA). ANYWAY, I LOVE YOU. YOU DESERVE AVERYTHING.

There seems to be a general consensus that Hungary should have placed much higher than it actually did. I'd like to offer another explanation, other than "just politics". What if Hungary was most peoples' second choice, just for the sake of argument? I would like to see voting whereby one could list their first three choices (1st=3 points, 2nd 2 pts., 3rd 1 point) which would then be counted toward a country's final top ten. You might see much different, and more accurate results.
I loved Hungary's song and thought it would have at least been in the top three.

Pity, pity, pity...This song is so great that 12th place is so little for it. Okay, the singer might have been a little nervous and I think she could have sung it better, but still...I don't deny that I am happy Greece won, but also felt sorry for Hungary. I liked "Vorogj vilag" better than "My number one", to be honest..Oh well, good luck next year, Hungary, and keep singing in Hungarian, please! You have a beautiful language and beautiful music, too. Greetings!

it's pity that a song like that ended up in the 12th place!!! i expected hungary to be definetely in one of the first 5 places. anyway, this contest has always some surprises. c u in athens hungary. p.s:noah, honey try to stay cool i know moldova was dreaming the 1st place(even with this bad song) but that is no reason to be so mean to the greek song an people in general. greece won because had the B E S T song and because the stage presence of helena was just perfect. did u think that by having the grandma on stage would your country win? i don't think so...
