History (1956 to 2004)

Estonia's previous appearances: 10 year(s) out of 49
Years participated: 1994; 1996-
Best result: 1st (2001)
Estonia has one of the best records of any of the east European newcomers that have appeared at Eurovision since 1993 - indeed, only Estonia (in 2001), Latvia (in 2002) and Ukraine (in 2004) have so far managed to win. Estonia got off to a terrible start when it scored just 2 points in 1994, spared last place only because Lithuania's début scored nothing at all. After missing the following year's contest due to relegation, Estonia bounced back in 1996 with a much improved 5th place, the start of a rather impressive run of results. With an 8th place in 1997, 12th in 1998 and 6th in 1999, it was surely only a matter of time before Estonia won the contest. Ines, with 'Once in a lifetime', was tipped for success in 2000, but had to be content with 4th.
When Estonia did win it caught everyone by surprise, the energetic 'Everybody', by Tanel Padar and Dave Benton, storming to a shock victory in 2001. Estonia came close to winning again the following year, but had to settle for 3rd with Sahlene's 'Runaway'. After such a good record, it's little surprise that 2003's disappointing 21st place for Ruffus and 'Eighties coming back' provoked much consternation and gnashing of teeth. In truth, it was a fantastic song, and while Estonia's Baltic neighbours gave it short shrift, the UK (3 points) and Ireland (8 points) gave it the appreciation it deserved. Perhaps Ruffus, with their retro outfits and sharp lyrics, were just too ironic for most Eurovision televoters. Whatever the reason, Estonia found itself in the Semi Final in 2004, where the unusual 'Tii' - performed in an obscure Estonian dialect by a sackcloth-clad, Baltic version of Girls Aloud - finished a tantalising 12th. Taking part in the Semi Final again in 2005, Estonia will surely be hoping to recover some of its earlier winning form.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 12
Position in Final draw: Failed to qualify
What I said prior to the Semi Final: "With a number of really strong songs in its 'Eurolaul' National Final, it's typical that Estonia has picked one of the songs that no-one rated very highly; as a result, it's easy to judge 'Let's get loud', performed by the girl group Suntribe, against the songs that didn't win - notably the extraordinary, Enigma-esque '11' by Deva Deva Dance and the Cardinals - coming to a rather unfavourable conclusion in the process. In fact, taken by itself 'Let's get loud' is quite good - a breezy enough slice of contemporary pop, with an annoyingly catchy chorus, that wouldn't sound out of place on a Girls Aloud or McFly album. On the downside, Suntribe have the worst English accents outside Belarus, while the shouty bit in the middle of the song is probably supposed to sound like the Spice Girls but instead conjures up a scary image of Macedonia's XXL and '100% to ljubam' (2000). Overall, it's just, well, nothing out of the ordinary, but who knows - perhaps the European public will be fed up with all this year's fiddlers and stomping Ruslana wannabes, and will vote for something fun and jolly instead. Alternatively, 'Let's get loud' might just be too throwaway to make much of an impression. Remember, it has to get more votes than fifteen other songs just to qualify for the Final... can it do it?"

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 16th to 18th
My prediction for Final: Unlikely to qualify
What I predicted prior to the Semi Final: "Estonia has revamped the song to make it a little more rocky, but it still retains the embarrassingly bad XXL moment, more's the pity. My prediction is that Estonia will struggle to qualify - not because the song is inherently bad, but because there are others that are more likely to do well. The fans would seem to agree, ranking Estonia 32nd out of 39 in the Soult.com Eurovision Poll 2005, while Coral's odds on an Estonian victory have drifted from an initial high of 20-1 to a more realistic 33-1."

What you thought...

Final Poll Ranking: out of 39 ()
(Updated 22 May 2005; change refers to movement over final week)
In the run up to the Contest, 27,998 visitors to this site voted for their favourite song in the Soult.com Eurovision Poll (up from 5,000 in 2004!)

What actually happened...

With 31 points and 20th place, Suntribe did about as well as most people had expected, and in line with my prediction. Featuring the worst English accents - and some of the worst singing - since Angelica's performance for Belarus, it was about as much as it deserved, hardly helped by the seasickness-enducing camera angles.

What the bookies thought...

 | Estonia to win: | 21/05/05 (prior to Final) | - |
| | 19/05/05 (after Semi Final) | - |
| | 19/05/05 (prior to Semi Final) | 33-1 |
| | 16/05/05 | 25-1 |
| | 15/05/05 | 25-1 |
| | 08/05/05 | 20-1 |
| | 02/05/05 | 20-1 |
| | 24/04/05 | 20-1 |
|
|
Starting out at 20-1 but drifting to 33-1 by the Semi Final, the bookies' odds went in the same direction as Suntribe's prospects of success.
(Odds quoted here were those offered by Coral.co.uk. 'F' indicates favourite, 'JF' joint favourite.)

I don't think this entry deserves all the harsh criticism it appears to have suffered. I even jumped to its defense when one of my friends said "Those five bints with turntables were awful!" The truth is that Eurovision is in my opinion meant to be a celebration of all different styles of music, so surely there's a place for good old trashy Europop. Well, it brings a smile to my face anyway :-)

Well, I think that we should put a limited age- under 13 years can't vote. But it's impossible... I hope that next year there will be much better song. this song was discusting. It sucks. Rebecca and Laura Ruled with their solos. Moonwalk was the best. Ooh, and Sven, please make better songs more like Moonwalk or something like that.

Hello Estonia,
Each year I wait excitedly for what will come from Estonia, our Homeland. Unfortunately, at times I am dissapointed. I think that the Powers That Be should have kept Vallina Ninja as the Estonian entrant for the Eurovision. It was a great song, the girls looked superb, fantastic, real professional, tasteful, elegant, the whole package was just perfect. They could not have been better, we were very proud of you. Sorry Suntribe, but Let's Get Loud, to me it was just an ok song, it didn't grab you like Angel, or a couple of the others.
And to win Eurovision, I think you just HAVE to have a song that is DYNAMITE, just as last year's great winner by Ukraine, Ruslanna,s was, it deserved to win.
I was looking forward to seeing her sing it again, thank God I taped it last year.
I truly pray that Estonia will win again and again, you have the talent, can't wait to see Maarija compete again, she should have won both times she entered, '97,'98,(?), if it wasn't for the Irish that year, and their beautiful entry The Voice, I'm sure she would have won. Both her songs were beautiful.
I can't help think that it is political at times though. Nevertheless when a country small in size, but huge in talent, and heart, such as Estonia, wins, it is a bigger victory, because of the odds.
I wait with baited breath for next year's entry, good luck always. Respectfully, Marjon Oldenburg, Brisbane, Australia.

well, i have to agree with many others. laura`s moonwalk and even rebecca`s have you ever were so much better songs, i absolutely loved moonwalk and even voted for it, but sadly it didn`t win :( by the way for anyone who didn`t know laura and rebecca are both in suntribe too! i actually quite dislike this song, but thats what most, well actually small girls who love them, wanted and... there`s nothing to do about it now, just feel sorry for laura and rebecca because there songs were so much better, but i`ll call for switzerland! like there was any other song to vote for :D but i really do like it, especially the beginning, and i think that lenna (the dark haired girl who sings alone in the beginning) is the best singer from that group and the only one with a real chance of going solo as a singer, so good luck lenna!!!

Estonia will qualify for the final as they have a dancy song, the support of eastern europe and they are the 12th act to perform in the semi-final. I think they will get fourth in the final therefor im putting a spread bet on them and at odds of between 20 - 1 (coral) and 26 - 1 (ladbrokes) its got to be a good investment. Im telling you people dont put money on greece, there performer is too stuck up to win eurovision
