History (1956 to 2004)

Denmark's previous appearances: 33 year(s) out of 49 [note]
Years participated: 1957-1966; 1978-1993; 1995; 1997; 1999-2002; 2004- [note]
Best result: 1st (1963, 2000)

With a 37 year gap between its wins in 1963 and 2000, Denmark holds the record for the longest period between successive Eurovision victories. Austria will manage to take the record if it wins in 2005, though given its recent form the prospects of that happening seem remote.

Since televoting, Denmark has seen highs and lows. The country missed the 1998 contest due to relegation, but did better than it deserved with the painful 'This time I mean it' in 1999, which finished 8th. In 2000, Denmark strolled to a surprising victory with the Olsen Brothers' 'Fly on the wings of love'. As usual, the single was a hit everywhere apart from the UK, though ironically, XTM's dance cover was a UK smash in 2003 - purists might not have liked it, but it was a great example of a cover version managing to do something completely different to the original. Denmark almost won again in 2001, with the enjoyable 'Never ever let you go', but it was down to earth with a bump in 2002 when Malene and 'Tell me who you are' finished last. Needless to say, Malta - always good at spotting an underdog - was among the few countries who gave it any points at all. To be fair, the song wasn't too bad, but Malene gave a tuneless, uncomfortable performance, proving just how much this can matter on the night. Since then there has been little for Denmark to cheer about - having had to miss 2003 through relegation, the country competed in the Semi Final in 2004, where Tomas Thordarson - widely regarded as having one of the year's better songs in 'Shame on you' - could only finish 13th, missing out on a place in the Contest proper. With such poor recent form, Denmark must surely be wondering whether it will ever again qualify for a Eurovision Final...

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 24
Position in Final draw: 13

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"It is interesting to note that Denmark's last two entries (in 2002 and 2004) have been performed by winners of Danish TV's 'Star for a Night' talent show. However, given Malene and Tomas' obvious inexperience - reflected in their unremarkable performances at Eurovision and resulting lack of success - you could be forgiven for thinking that Denmark would try something different in 2005. So what do the televoters do? Yes, faced with a choice of the Olsen Brothers - who have the not insignificant advantage of winning Eurovision once already, as well an extraordinarily catchy song in 'Little Yellow Radio' - or Jacob Sveistrup, another 'Star for a Night' alumnus, they vote in their thousands for the latter. True, Jacob has a decent voice, but whether he can cut it on stage in front of millions of television viewers remains to be seen. As for the song, 'Talking to you', I have to say I find it dull, dull, dull - the kind of song you can't remember the moment you've stopped listening to it. It begins quite well - the verse has a pleasant jazzy feel, reminiscent of Max (Germany) from 2004, and provides a good showcase for Jacob's vocal talents. Then the chorus kicks in and it all turns into a bit of a racket, with Jacob and the backing singers seemingly singing different songs over the top of each other - rather like a Portuguese entry, really. Overall, I can't help feeling that the Danish entry is instantly forgettable durge - but will Europe disagree, and propel Jacob into the Final?"

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 20th to 22nd
My prediction for Final: Will not qualify
See all my predictions for 2005

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"Very unlikely, I suspect. Coral rate Denmark's chances of victory at 66-1, while the fans are similarly unimpressed, ranking the Danish entry 35th out of 39 in the Soult.com Eurovision Poll 2005. Anything higher than a mid-table performance in the Semi Final would truly be a surprise."

What actually happened...

OK, given my claim that "anything higher than a mid-table performance in the Semi Final would truly be a surprise", I think you can reasonably say that I am, indeed, surprised. I don't know how or why, but Jacob Sveistrup somehow managed to finish 3rd in the Semi Final, before slipping slightly to 10th in the Final. To be fair, he gave a very strong vocal performance of 'Talking to you' in both the Semi Final and the Final, though I couldn't help being disturbed by his grimacing at the camera, his uncanny resemblance to the boy from Jemini (UK 2003), or the camp dancers wandering around in the background. Never mind... it must just be a taste thing. Perhaps one year Denmark will enter a song that I actually like?

What the bookies thought...

Denmark - graphic courtesy of CannySites.com Denmark to win: 21/05/05 (prior to Final) 40-1
19/05/05 (after Semi Final) 66-1
19/05/05 (prior to Semi Final) 66-1
16/05/05 66-1
15/05/05 66-1
08/05/05 66-1
02/05/05 66-1
24/04/05 40-1

Get this... 2004's Danish entry was highly rated at 12-1, but bombed; 2005's was rated 66-1 prior to the Semi Final, yet ended up finishing 3rd in the Semi and 10th in the Final. Welcome success for Denmark after a couple of awful results - I still hate the song, though.

(Odds quoted here were those offered by Coral.co.uk. 'F' indicates favourite, 'JF' joint favourite.)

Really bad. Why did it rise to the final ????? Was it better than the Netherlands? Please, please, PLEASE! Where is the good taste? An annoying song as this one beats the masterpiece of the fantastic Glennis Grace and even Andorra had some quality that this song never contains. That is really stupid. I hate this song, and there is no reason for anybody to like it.

How can you call this song dul, you mean person! It's soft and comforting and nice to listen to- like eating mashed potato instead of all that overspiced Turkish-style music that even my home country (the UK) subscribed to this year. Well done Jakob. I liked you so much I even had your album shipped in from Copenhagen. Keep up the good work!

Your song was very good indeed! I liked it a lot. Jakob seemed to be very relaxed and calm. Being a truly Scandinavian song, it was very catchy and warm at the same time. I think that this was one of the best song this year.

Charlotte, it seemed to me as well that singer's voice resembled that of Keating's from Boyzone. Nevertheless, it's a fantastic voice and everything souded well. The Danish performers had some positive energy and really made me smile. (and all the Danish people seem to be very cheerful and nice) On the whole, I'm cheering for successfull further Jacob Sveistrup's career, best of luck!

WOW! This one song has restored my faith in the contest. The UK used to bash out songs like this which always did well . The formula is obvious. Come on UK - wake up to the fact!!
I love this song to get the Donny Osmand treatment!

I agree with everyone who said this song is fab! I love it!! I am so glad that he has done so well, he really deserved it .. he had such good stage presence, and i think that he is the sort of musician that young people should be admiring, and im only 13 years old! Congrats Denmark!

I dont know if anyone agrees .. but dont you think that Jakob along with his backing singers were like Boyzone reformed!?! I was made up! One of my favourite bands back together again!!! YAY!

This was THE ONLY SONG in the entire contest (and we saw both parts). It's a super song, and should have won in a canter. But then, Eurovision has never been about the best song, has it ...?
