More about the 2005 result for Cyprus

2006 Contest: Well, I predicted that 'Ela ela' would struggle to secure Cyprus' place in the 2006 Final, and so it proved, with the song managing to muster 46 points and 18th place in the Eurovision Final. Constantinos and his chums made an enthusiastic effort, but no amount of muscle flexing or crotch grabbing could disguise the fact that the overall performance was a bit of a mess, vocally and visually. Still, the Greeks gave it 12, so they must have enjoyed it.

History (1956 to 2004)

Cyprus's previous appearances: 22 year(s) out of 49 [note]
Years participated: 1981-1987; 1989-2000; 2002- [note]
Best result: 5th (1982, 1997, 2004)

Cyprus has a mixed record at Eurovision - most entries have either done very well (top ten) or very badly (the bottom few places), with little in between. The televoting era has not been particularly kind to Cyprus, with 6th place in 2002 and 5th in 2004 the only rewards among generally unimpressive results - 11th in 1998, 22nd in 1999, 21st in 2000, and 20th in 2003. 1999's result was made worse by the fact that Marlain's 'Tha nai erotas' was one of the pre-contest favourites - indeed, with a strong, modern song and good performance I'm still puzzled at why it did quite so badly. Unfortunately for Cyprus, Greece was absent that year; otherwise, 'Tha nai erotas' would have gained a slightly better 14 points, instead of the 2 it actually got. In 2003, Stelios Konstantas might have been 'Feeling alive', but most of Europe wasn't by the end of his performance. He mustered only 15 points, 12 of those from Greece and 2 from Malta, who can always be guaranteed to vote strangely.

Fortunately, Lisa Andreas brought some class to the proceedings in 2004 with her beautiful ballad, 'Stronger every minute' - though its 5th place was an excellent result, it was perhaps less than it truly deserved, the outstanding song and performance surely representing Cyprus' strongest ever contender. Nevertheless, it was quite enough to secure Cyprus a place in the 2005 Final, where Eurovision veteran Constantinos seeks to better his already impressive tally of 8th and 6th places in 1996 and 2002 respectively (the latter as a member of the group One).

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: N/A
Position in Final draw: 9

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"Constantinos performed four songs in the Cypriot national final, and ends up performing one he composed and wrote himself. For good measure, he's bringing along another Eurovision veteran as backing vocalist - Elina Konstantopoulou, who represented Greece in 1995 with the song 'Pia prosefhi' (Elina stepped in to replace Elena Patroklou, the Cypriot entrant from 1991, who had originally been lined up to accompany Constantinos before withdrawing for personal reasons). 'Ela ela' has provoked comparisons with Sakis' 'Shake it' from last year, and there are certainly some similarities in both the song and vocal style. However, 'Ela ela' is possibly the stronger of the two, with a lively melody, memorable chorus, and a distinctly Greek flavour - thanks in part to Elina's exotic 'ela elas' in the background - that ought to go down well. There isn't a lot more to say, really - like Sakis, Constantinos' voice is perhaps a little thin, but with the right dance routine and a tight vest the sky should be the limit..."

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: N/A
My prediction for Final: 17th to 19th
See all my predictions for 2005

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"In reality, Cyprus' entry seems to have provoked little excitement prior to the Contest, suggesting that the enthusiasm for last year's 'Shake it' was more for Sakis than the song - honestly, are they really so different? Where Sakis dominated the polls and the bookies in 2004, Constantinos maintains a respectable but less impressive position, a steady 5th place in the Soult.com Eurovision Poll 2005 with so-so odds of 28-1 at bookmakers Coral. Listening to the song again, it also reminds me a little of the 2003 Cypriot song, Stelios' 'Feeling alive'. Constantinos will certainly be hoping to emulate Sakis' 3rd place rather than Stelios' 20th, but I fear he may have a struggle keeping Cyprus out of the 2006 Semi Final."

What the bookies thought...

Cyprus - graphic courtesy of CannySites.com Cyprus to win: 21/05/05 (prior to Final) 25-1
19/05/05 (after Semi Final) 20-1
19/05/05 (prior to Semi Final) 28-1
16/05/05 25-1
15/05/05 25-1
08/05/05 25-1
02/05/05 25-1
24/04/05 20-1

Odds of 25-1 for Cyprus to win were quite optimistic, though not as promising as Lisa Andreas' a year earlier. Rather like Cyprus' result, really.

(Odds quoted here were those offered by Coral.co.uk. 'F' indicates favourite, 'JF' joint favourite.)

I have heard the song many many times before the actual night and really loved this one, BUT it just did not work for him on the night. He didn't sing it well (sounded very nervous) and he had a new lady singer in the backround who was just not good enough as the previous one (she was singing ile ile instead of ela ela!). All in all a very dissapointed performace on the night. By contrast Moldoda had a superb performance package and nearly got there. Well done to Greece - probably was the best song.

WOW! I thought that this song was really good .. but I think that unfortunatly, even though he is drop dead gorgeous, Constantinos was trying to be alot like the amazing Sakis Rouvas! I thought that Cyprus would have done alot better this year, as he gave a really good and sexy performance! I was a bit disappointed when they didnt even qualify. Considering Constantinos even wrote the song .. bless him .. I send my love and best wishes, and I wish him the best in the future .. Charlie xxx

i just want to say that as Cypriot i feel that it was deserving to us to get a much better position in Eurovison. The song was very good and i can not see why she didn't become on the list of the first five winners. we came in the conclusion that a good song can not be appriciated! All is according the interests of each country. Many concradulations Konstantino! you were one of the best
