History (1956 to 2004)

Bosnia-Herzegovina's previous appearances: 10 year(s) out of 49 [note]
Years participated: 1993-1997; 1999; 2001- [note]
Best result: 7th (1999)

While its ex-Yugoslav neighbours, Croatia and Slovenia, have regularly finished in the top ten at Eurovision, Bosnia's record has tended to be less impressive; however, given the country's conflict, still ongoing at the time of Bosnia's first appearance in 1993, its very participation was poignant and welcome.

Bosnia was marooned in the mid-teens for much of the 90s - 16th in 1993, 15th in 1994, 14th in 1995 and 13th in 1996, before falling back again to 22nd in 1997. Missing 1998 through relegation, the country did surprisingly well in 1999 when Dino and Beatrice - late replacements after the originally selected song by Hari Mata Hari was disqualified - hit the heights of 7th place with 'Putnici', performed in a combination of Bosnian and French. Unfortunately, the system of calculating each country's five year average meant that Bosnia had to miss 2000's contest, before resuming normal service with a 14th place in 2001, 13th in 2002, and 16th in 2003. With seven of Bosnia's ten entries to date finishing between 13th and 16th place, no other country can presumably claim such a consistent record of underwhelming achievement. However, with the fabulous Deen and 'In the disco' finishing an impressive 9th in 2004, Bosnia deservedly finds itself directly qualified for the 2005 Final.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: N/A
Position in Final draw: 21

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"What's going on here? Has Bosnia chosen one of the Swedish songs by mistake? Feminnem (see what they've done there?) deserve credit for their memorable band name, but the song 'Call me' (the Bosnian version, 'Zovi', being translated into English for the Contest) brings back horrible memories of Carola (1991) or Charlotte (1999) - it literally is the kind of song that would once have won the contest for Sweden. Sure, the whole thing is very upbeat and catchy - scarily so, in fact - but unfortunately for Feminnem, and fortunately for us, it all seems a decade too late. Televoters' tastes have moved on, haven't they? Still, Feminnem deserve some credit for not taking the whole thing too seriously, with the enjoyable preview video making lots of amusing nods to ABBA. I still preferred Deen (Bosnia 2004), though, but maybe that's just me... ;)"

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: N/A
My prediction for Final: 11th to 13th
See all my predictions for 2005

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"If it was still 1991, we would more than likely be heading to Sarajevo for next year's Eurovision. As it is, 'Call me' is scarily well-regarded, with rather optimistic odds of 16-1. Honestly though, this is 2005, and I can't believe for one moment that televoters around Europe will consider 'Call me' the best thing on offer in Kiev. Feminnem will no doubt give a lively performance, and while it won't win, it may just do well enough to secure Bosnia's direct entry to the 2006 Final."

What actually happened...

Well, I said that Feminnem 'may just' gain Bosnia direct entry to the 2006 Final, which wasn't too far off, 14th place falling a little short of what was needed. As one might have expected, 'Call me' proved to be a 'love it' or 'hate it' song, performing rather well in some countries (10 points each from Austria, Croatia and Turkey), while scoring nothing at all in others. However, Bosnia's venture into schlager seemed to pay off, with Denmark, Sweden and Norway all rewarding it with points. Feminnem's performance, meanwhile, was rather jolly, featuring lots of over-elaborate choreography, strange pronunciation and superfluous backing singers, before descending into a bit of a shouty mess by the end. Again, I can't help feeling that 'Call me' may have worked as well or better in its original Bosnian version, as my impression was that Feminnem were singing their English lyrics without having a clue what they actually meant. In these circumstances, I'd much rather hear artists singing confidently in their native language, than hear them performing incongruously in English.

What the bookies thought...

Bosnia-Herzegovina - graphic courtesy of CannySites.com Bosnia-Herzegovina to win: 21/05/05 (prior to Final) 12-1
19/05/05 (after Semi Final) 11-1
19/05/05 (prior to Semi Final) 16-1
16/05/05 20-1
15/05/05 20-1
08/05/05 20-1
02/05/05 20-1
24/04/05 16-1

With odds of 12-1, Feminnem's chances of Eurovision glory were - absurdly - rated as higher than Deen's a year earlier. Though 14th place for Feminnem was not a disaster, it certainly failed to live up the bookmakers' hype.

(Odds quoted here were those offered by Coral.co.uk. 'F' indicates favourite, 'JF' joint favourite.)

In reply to Bosanka, I don't think it matters where singers come from or why would Celine Dion ( Canadian) get to sing in the contest? I love Call me and it has grown on me even more over the last year, I think we will find someone will do a cover of it one day.

settle down tiger.. don't you think your comments about bosnia's performances to date were a little harsh? i mean, given the circumstances, its a wonder they even get together relatively good acts. to call them underachievers was a bit much. since Deen's performance, i've kept an eye out for the bosnians. you gotta give 'em credit... =)

Good luck, Bosnia-Herzegovina!

Whether or not the song is the best Eurovision has ever seen - a contest in Sarajevo would be!

As we did with the Olympics in 1984, we will make something that will be regarded as the best of its time!

It's the 50 year anniversary! Voters have to pick Feminnem, even if their "lets celebrate 50 years" act is shameless!

From someone, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Fashion comes and goes in cycles...this year may be a year of ABA. So, Femminem, good luck and see you in Sarajevo.

I am sorry to say this but Bosnia will be in semi finals next year. I hope I am wrong! The girls did not deserve to be in Ukraine. It was easy to get a passport when they needed it, but Bosnian Eurovision team should not let them participate even in the contest in Bosnia becuase one of them DID NOT have a Bosnian citizenship at the time of the contest. Surelly, if they didn't win the contest the girl that didn't have the citizenship would never get it. Does this mean that "singers" from any country can represent Bosnia? What a shame!!!!!! People, wake up! Europe is getting a wrong picutre of us! Or maybe not????

From Jenny, BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

oh dear it is 1982 again - it could be Bardo, New Seekers or an Abba B side. Will pick up votes from less musically aware countries as it is catchy but i think it will finish about 15th or 16th

From Guell, PUERTO RICO

This song is so similar to "Take me to your heaven" (Sweden 99) that it's one note away from plagiarism.

From XS, TURKEY

I heard the turkish version of this song. I havent heard any accent cuter than this recently. It actually helped me like the song.
Definitely 10 points from me, 12 is for Denmark.!!!
