History (1956 to 2004)

Andorra's previous appearances: 1 year(s) out of 49
Years participated: 2004-
Best result: 18th in Semi (2004)
A tiny principality tucked between France and Spain in the Pyrenees, Andorra made its first ever appearance at Eurovision in 2004. As a new entrant, Andorra had to participate in the Semi Final; unfortunately, Marta Roure feel well short, only mustering 18th place in the Semi Final for her song 'Jugarem a estimar-nos'. Indeed, had it not been for 12 points from Spain, Andorra would have had the ignominy of scoring nothing at all. Nevertheless, Andorra is back for another go in 2005, this time aiming to secure points from the Netherlands as well by sending the Dutch-born singer, Marian van de Wal. Needless to say, Andorra must once again participate in the Semi Final, competing with 24 other countries for one of the 10 remaining places in Saturday's Final.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 18
Position in Final draw: Failed to qualify
What I said prior to the Semi Final: "Marian van de Wal performed three songs in Andorra's national final, with 'La mirada interior' (The inner glance) proving by far the most popular with both the jury and the televoters. Rightly so too, as it's really rather good. Opening with Ruslana-style drumming (I'm spotting a trend here...), Marian whoops and swoops over the unusual melody, before giving way to a pleasant piano solo, and then bursting back with a vengeance near the end. The video is similarly ethereal, with Marian doing lots of Kate Bush-style pointing and waving, perhaps trying to cast her spell over the viewers at home. Will it work though?"

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 22nd to 24th
My prediction for Final: Will not qualify
What I predicted prior to the Semi Final: "No, no, no!!!! Andorra has ill-advisedly jazzed up its entry prior to Eurovision, and managed to eradicate much of its beauty in the process. Where the original version had a lovely, quirky, stripped down quality, the new version - the one that appears on the official compilation CD - just has too much going on, with unnecessary backing vocals and intrusive instrumentals detracting from Marian's haunting vocal. Sadly, reports from the rehearsals suggest that, just like poor Marta Roure last year, Marian will have to distract attention from various eejits in the background not really contributing much at all to the performance. What a shame, as I really wanted this song to do well, and in its original version I think this could have easily qualified for the Final. Unfortunately, however, it's difficult to see it making much of an impression in its new form - another 12 points from Spain and nothing from anybody else, I fear. Soult.com Eurovision visitors seem to agree, with Andorra languishing at 38th out of 39 in the Poll 2005, while bookmakers Coral give Marian a measly 100-1 chance of winning the whole thing. Whatever the result, I hope Andorra will try again in 2006 - Eurovision is all the more richer for having an entry performed in the beautiful Catalan language."

What actually happened...

Well, despite my fears, the Andorran performance was really rather good - the visual presentation was not too OTT and worked well, while Marian looked lovely and was very good vocally. Unfortunately, the presence of two oiled-up boy dancers, and what appeared to be Kinga from the UK's Big Brother 6 on backing vocals, was not enough to gain Andorra the votes it needed. Spain gave Marian its 10 (having awarded its 12 to Romania, for some reason), but the only other points came from Albania, Moldova and the Netherlands, resulting in 27 points and 23rd place. On the plus side, it does mean that Andorra has at least achieved the feat of finishing higher than Monaco on both of its appearances so far - surely some consolation? By the way, I'm told that Andorra's slightly robust and very enthusiastic backing singer was not in fact Kinga from Big Brother, but the esteemed Anabel Conde, runner-up for Spain in 1995. Tsk!

What the bookies thought...

 | Andorra to win: | 21/05/05 (prior to Final) | - |
| | 19/05/05 (after Semi Final) | - |
| | 19/05/05 (prior to Semi Final) | 100-1 |
| | 16/05/05 | 100-1 |
| | 15/05/05 | 100-1 |
| | 08/05/05 | 100-1 |
| | 02/05/05 | 100-1 |
| | 24/04/05 | 66-1 |
|
|
With odds of 100-1, Marian needed a shock of Alf Poier (Austria, 2003) proportions in order to even reach the Final. Unfortunately for Marian - despite improving on 2004's result by picking up points from countries other than Spain - it didn't happen.
(Odds quoted here were those offered by Coral.co.uk. 'F' indicates favourite, 'JF' joint favourite.)

Andorra's song was one of the best songs in semi-final. I think it's very fascinanting, special and different than other. I voted for this song. I'm sorry because wasn't entered into a final.

This song is awful! I thought that you performed it really well on the night though, and the rocky beat in the background really worked .. still not my favourite song this contest I'm afraid! Sorry x

That's a nice song, but i think, "My number one" is by far the best song. Last year's competition had a plenty of good songs and dance hits. In 2005 only Helena has power and rythm. She will have an excellent stage performance and she might win and bring the 2006 ESC in Athens, Greece.
My top 5 is: 1. Greece 2. Andorra (very good song!) 2. UK 3. Belarus 4. Albania 5. Cyprus
Anyway: This is just a celebration! Have a nice ESC evening !!!

a pleasant song but not with enough individuality to make the final, if it does scrape through it will finish 23rd or 24th.

A very strong song indeed. Shame that Andorra is a tiny country and don't have many neighbours around. The song will be wasted whilst many other rubbish going through the final

Wonderful song, very nice variable beat, nice vocals as well. I like both versions, but the new one is undoubtedly more modern and stands a better chance. I think most people make the mistake to think of the name of the country first, before they judge. So it is Andorra, so it is small, so it only has about 70.000 people, so they speak Catalan. So what??? If this song is judged based on fair criteria, it should do very well and it deserves to do so, I think! Good luck Andorra!!!

Not bad. At least better than that of the last year. Good luck from Malta !!! Hope u'll pass to the final (because WE need songs that get few points, so that everyone will vote for the great song, MALTA) 10x 4 voting 4 malta ;).

...ugh, I thought the original version would have been able to sneak into the final. Doubtable now.

A different song. But is it enough ? This time ANDORRA could qualify to the final, though.

Andorra is my favourite entry for this year's ESC. Really fresh and very pleasant I will put my 12 points in it. I am bored of all the wannabees that we've seen in the previous years.
ANDORRA 2 WIN!!

I just don´t see it why since 2003 the ethnic and probably most weird entries of a year are considered a copy of Sanomi in ? I don´t see any plagiarism in the case of Andorra 2005 or Estonia 2004 - Sanomi was unique and will remain unique! Nevertheless, "La mirada interior" ranges among my favourites this year, and I really appreciate that they hopefully stick to Catalán. The main problem is, that to me the strongest part of the song is the instrumental part which is very athmospheric - so it seems to loose a bit during the las chorus. Still I hope, they will make it to the final!

This is a good song and SHOULD do well but unfortunately will probably get left behind in the semi.

maybe that "something" that Howard Atkinson can't decipher is just that marian won't sing in English, but in a European non-official language. Sorry, but i prefer authenticity to monolingualism

Is Andorra turning into the new Finland ? - strong songs which, for some reason or another, don't live up to expectations. I like this, but something tells me it won't make the final. Just a hunch.

A very good song, but it sounds too like the Urban Trad entry from Belgium a few years ago. I think they could be done for copyright! Still very pleasant though.
