History (1956 to 2003)

Poland's previous appearances: 8 year(s) out of 48 [note]
Years participated: 1994-1999; 2001; 2003- [note]
Best result: 2nd (1994)

Finishing 2nd with Edyta Gorniak's wonderful 'To nie ja!' in 1994, Poland had a fantastic start to its Eurovision career but has been trying to live up to it ever since. The country finished a disappointing 18th in 1995, 15th in 1996, 11th in 1997, 17th in 1998 and 18th in 1999, before having to miss 2000's contest due to its poor five-year average. Its return in 2001 was barely worth the effort, finishing a new low of 20th and being relegated again. Happily, 2003's contest proved much more fruitful, with Ich Troje and 'Keine grenzen - zadnych granic' finishing a very respectable 7th. Cannily, to appeal to as many countries as possible, the song was performed in a mix of Polish, German and Russian - Germany rewarded it with its 12 points, but Russia was unimpressed and gave it no points at all. It was a beautiful song, and with one of the best performances at the 2003 contest it really deserved to finish higher; nevertheless, 7th was quite enough to give Poland an automatic place in this year's Final.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: N/A
Position in Final draw: 19

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"Yet another song playing the ethnic music card, Poland are represented this year by Blue Cafe and 'Love song', only the second occasion that the country's entry has been performed in English. Blue Cafe's female vocalist, Tatiana Okupnik (who also wrote the music), certainly has an unusual voice, and has been described as sounding like a duck. The song itself is also quirky, with probably the least challenging lyrics of any 2004 entry - 'Sweet song, love song', quacks Tatiana, 'Sweet song, wanna give you this song'. Nevertheless, the song has a rather nice African feel to it, with an introduction that could be straight from 'The Lion King'. Although 'Love song' is ridiculous on one level, it doesn't take itself too seriously, and there's something really rather charming about it. Blue Cafe 'wanna give you this song' - but will Europe want to accept?"

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: N/A
My prediction for Final: 10th to 14th
See all my predictions for 2004

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"Poland's performance in the fan polls is unremarkable, and the country is stuck in the middle of the betting. On the other hand, performing near the end of the running order, and coming after the dull Irish song, Poland has quite a reasonable draw. However, with so many strong songs already in the Final, even before we know who's qualified from the Semi, it's difficult to see this challenging for victory unless Europe falls for its quirky charm in a big way. I can see it creeping into the top ten, but a place in the high teens might be the best that Poland can expect."

What actually happened

Mmm, another disappointing performance of a song that really needed a strong performance to lift it out of the ordinary. Tatiana lived up to her duck-sounding reputation, honking her way through 'Love song' while her entourage drowned her out with their instruments. Again, all a bit of a mess. Perhaps the worst feature of the performance, however, was Tatiana's dress - possibly the most hideous frock I have ever seen at Eurovision. A combination of black leather and netting, it left nothing to the imagination, yet was somehow deeply unflattering. A dress so tarty, it almost made Xandee's (Belgium, 2004) outfit look demure. One can only imagine that Tatiana had her sights on the prestigious Barbara Dex Award, the annual award for the worst Eurovision outfit, named after Barbara Dex who represented Belgium in the 1993 Contest and, according to the Award's organisers, "wore an awful dress that evening". However, the Poles had obviously not banked on Romania's Sanda Ladosi stealing their sartorial thunder, whose performance would follow later that evening...

Given all these factors, it has to be something of a surprise that 'Love song' mustered as many points as it did, its total of 27 and 17th place coming largely from Poland's Lithuanian (7 points) and Ukrainian (5 points) neighbours. However, the Belarussians - despite being neighbours - gave it nothing. My prediction, meanwhile, was quite close, but a little on the optimistic side.

What the bookies thought...

Poland - graphic courtesy of CannySites.com Poland to win: 15/05/04 (prior to Final) 40-1
13/05/04 (after Semi Final) 33-1
11/05/04 20-1
08/05/04 25-1
06/05/04 20-1
04/05/04 20-1
31/04/04 20-1
24/04/04 20-1
17/04/04 20-1
07/04/04 25-1
24/03/04 25-1

Some thought the Polish entry was a dark horse, but in the end 40-1 proved a fair reflection of its prospects.

Poland has given us a bit of a salsa, though it sounds like the vocals are done by Eartha Kitt or something… no Eartha sounds better…

This song will probably be one of the biggest surprises of this year's contest. The lyrics are pathetic but listen to the other entries and honesty compels you to admit that the Polish song is certainly not the only one with stupid lyrics.

I've seen Blue Café on stage while I was in Poland last year and let me tell you something : as far as live music is concerned, this band is unbeatable! They manage to make the most mediocre songs catchy! They have an incredible stage presence and Tatiana's voice (love it or hate it!)is something to be remembered. I'm sure Blue Cafe will set Istanbul on fire ... even if they don't win!

Good luck Poland!!!

Oh, I like this song very, very, very much! I don't know why? It is very sweet and pop, but it is very unusualy too. And seems, it doesn't take itself too seriously, it is like summer wind or playing baby. But it is wonderful! Although, will Europe prize it?!
GOOD LUCK!

To Vedati:
What the hell do you know about music. Go back and listen to your stupid and horrible native songs that don't have anything in common with music. Blue caffe is a nice band, especially the girl witch has a nice voice and a nice looking body :).
I hope it will get some points in comparison with the past losers!
