History (1956 to 2003)

Lithuania's previous appearances: 4 year(s) out of 48
Years participated: 1994;1999; 2001-2002
Best result: 13th (2001)
Lithuania must be wondering what it's doing wrong. While its Baltic neighbours Estonia and Latvia have each carried off a Eurovision victory (in 2001 and 2002 respectively), Lithuania's record in the contest is rather less impressive. Indeed, it hardly got off to a good start, with Lithuania's first entry in 1994, performed by Ovidijus Vysniauskas, scoring 'nul points'. Perhaps wisely, Lithuania waited until 1999 before trying again, when it gained 13 points, 20th place (out of 23) and relegation for its efforts. 2001 represented Lithuania's best performance so far, when Skamp managed a more 'impressive' 13th place with 'You Got Style'. More importantly, it meant that Lithuania finally scored highly enough to participate in the following year's contest; however, it was back to business as usual with Aivaras' 'Happy You' mustering just 12 points and 23rd place in 2002. Having had to sit out 2003, the new format of Semi Final and Final at least means that Lithuania can take part every year. Lithuania are obviously taking part in the Semi Final, and need to finish in the top ten places to reach the Final on 15 May.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 12
Position in Final draw: Failed to qualify
What I said prior to the Semi Final: "This year, Lithuanian hopes rest on Linas & Simona, one of quite a few male-female duos taking part in the 2004 contest. Unfortunately, the prospects of Eurovision going to Vilnius seem as remote as ever. 'What happened to your love' isn't a terrible song - there's just nothing very memorable about it. Sandwiched between the flamboyant Ukrainian song and the completely barmy Albanian entry, it's difficult to see this making an impression on the televoters."

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 20th to 22nd
My prediction for Final: Will not qualify
What I predicted prior to the Semi Final: "It's likely that this song may pick up a few consolation votes from neighbours Belarus and Latvia, but with Russia and Poland not taking part in the Semi Final televoting, don't bet against Lithuania repeating their 1994 showing of 'nul points'. I reckon there's more chance of Jemini winning a 'Best Newcomer' Brit Award than this reaching the Final. Sorry, Lithuania..."

What actually happened

Poor Linas and Simona never stood much of a chance in the Semi Final, coming after the antics of Sakis and Ruslana. Their vocal performance was fine, marred only by dancers making ridiculous movements in the background. What a pity then that their song was just so desperately dull.
My assertion that Linas and Simona stood no chance of reaching the Final was proved correct, as was my prediction that they would pick up votes from Belarus (only 2, mind you) and Latvia (a more neighbourly 8). However, by finishing 16th they actually did rather better than I had expected (I predicted 20th to 22nd). Unfortunately, I should also have seen the points from Cyprus (7, I tell you!!!) and Greece (just 2) coming, given the presence of a Greek Cypriot (Michalis Antonio) on the songwriting credits. That accounts for 19 of Lithuania's 26 points - quite what Ireland (3), Israel (1), and Malta (3) were doing giving it points, we will never know. Since when did Malta have a border with Lithuania, anyway? Still, I think I'm allowed to count this as a 'close' rather than a 'wrong'.

What the bookies thought...

 | Lithuania to win: | 15/05/04 (prior to Final) | - |
| | 13/05/04 (after Semi Final) | - |
| | 11/05/04 | 25-1 |
| | 08/05/04 | 33-1 |
| | 06/05/04 | 28-1 |
| | 04/05/04 | 25-1 |
| | 31/04/04 | 25-1 |
| | 24/04/04 | 25-1 |
| | 17/04/04 | 25-1 |
| | 07/04/04 | 25-1 |
| | 24/03/04 | 25-1 |
|
|
The bookies rated Lithuania consistently highly, but their enthusiasm failed to rub off on the televoters at home.
(Odds quoted here were those offered by Coral.co.uk. 'F' indicates favourite, 'JF' joint favourite.)

Why doesn't anybody like this song? It's doing badly in polls and people don't seem to like it. But, it is one of my favourite songs, and will be really annoyed if it doesn't make it to the final. Just give it some credit!

Hi everyone,
I can't understand why some people are so angry about others' opinion. I reckon that everyone can express what they think but it should not sound insulting.
As for this song, it is not a bad one. This was the best song in our Lithuanian eurosong final and I voted for it. I believe that Linas and Simona are very good performers and they will have a nice stage performance in Istambul. I will still be happy with their song even if they don't qualify for the final.

It's terrible song...Shame...I just want to tell what commission elected this song, public voted for other singers. Most of Lithuania people are resentfull, we really don't like this ugly song!

Is it me, or does he sound a bit like Stevie Wonder?. And is that somebody farting in the bath on the intro? This is not the worst of the plethora of latin numbers and might surprise a few people!

Sorry guys if my language was a bit rude, but i think everybody understood what i wanted to tell! How can you rank the song if you know just several sources where the opinions are expressed. Internet is not only one source of information...There are magazines, newspapers, tv, radio...At the same time just 1/9 perhaps of people who re going to wach Eurovision on Tv are describing their opinions in such chat like this...That is the reason hy the songs that are really low ranked wining the competition...(Latvian entry, estonian entry; no one could predict). To tell about the song your own opinion is not a negative thing, but sometimes you can obviously feel politics and not even trying to listent to the song...
My personal opinion, if you will ask: this year a small country is going to win, especially the winer is possible between the countries entering EU.
Lithuanian entry is not too bad, and really not worse than another, but it depends how they will sinf life cause their song require really a lot of vocal abilities.
Good luck to Linas and Simona!

Ops, i didn't know they are doing flamenco in Lithuania? This is probably the most populistic song this year! Awful.
And "Micco", relax and except that we have free speach in Europe. To say this (very nice) Site is "discrimative" is ridiculous just as the answer of one users question "why isreal is a participant of the ESC?" when he immadiately was called "antisemitic". Poohhh...heavy Reactions here!

Micco - it's perfectly obvious who created the site, given that it's got my name on it.
My opinions and predictions aren't 'discriminative' - they are opinions and predictions, and people are very capable of agreeing or disagreeing as they see fit.
I'm entitled to my view as you are - but I'd appreciate it if you didn't use such bad language.

I don't have any fucken idea who created this cristal ball side, but they are making a really negative image for some countries...It is some kind discriminative and really not trying to evaluate the song! I love lithuanian entry! hope they will show for cristal predictors a big fuck!

I really really like this song from Lietuva!! Each time I play it, I find myself singing along and it is such a happy song (they seem to have something with "happy songs") and the song doesn't get annoying in the middle, like most songs of this type get. So I think Lithuania might be heading for a very good result this year. Very best of luck to you Lietuva!!

GREAT SONG!! VERY FUNKY!! AMAZING VOICES and singers with character... something that has been missing from the eurovision

I really like this song since the first time I listened to it! I like the rythm, the lyrics and the tune. I think that if Linas & Simona have a good performance and they act and dance nice on the stage they could take a good position. I find Simona's voice very erotic and sexy! I wish them the best!!!!!1
