History (1956 to 2003)

Denmark's previous appearances: 32 year(s) out of 48 [note]
Years participated: 1957-1966; 1978-1993; 1995; 1997; 1999-2002 [note]
Best result: 1st (1963, 2000)

With a 37 year gap between its wins in 1963 and 2000, Denmark holds the record for the longest period between successive Eurovision victories. Austria will manage to take the record if it wins in 2004, but looking at the Austrian entry, the prospects of that happening seem remote.

Since televoting, Denmark has seen highs and lows. The country missed the 1998 contest due to relegation, but did better than it deserved with the painful 'This time I mean it' in 1999, which finished 8th. In 2000, Denmark strolled to a surprising victory with the Olsen Brothers' 'Fly on the wings of love'. As usual, the single was a hit everywhere apart from the UK, though ironically, XTM's dance cover was a UK smash in 2003 - purists might not have liked it, but it was a great example of a cover version managing to do something completely different to the original. Denmark almost won again in 2001, with the enjoyable 'Never ever let you go', but it was down to earth with a bump in 2002 when Malene and 'Tell me who you are' finished last. Needless to say, Malta - always good at spotting an underdog - was among the few countries who gave it any points at all. To be fair, the song wasn't too bad, but Malene gave a tuneless, uncomfortable performance, proving just how much this can matter on the night. Having had to miss 2003 through relegation, Denmark must compete in the Semi Final in 2004.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 19
Position in Final draw: Failed to qualify

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"As usual, Denmark have translated their song into English for Eurovision, with 'Sig det' løgn' becoming 'Shame on you'. Strangely, latin-flavoured music seems big in Scandinavia this year, as like Finland's entry, this sounds more like it should be an entry from Spain than Denmark. Nevertheless, Tomas Thordarson is another singer with a good voice, and the song is suitably energetic, with some lively backing singers."

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 9th to 11th
My prediction for Final: Possible qualifier; 18th to 22nd if it does
See all my predictions for 2004

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"Coming between the doleful ballads from Croatia and Serbia, Denmark's lively performance should certainly make an impression. I don't really like this song much at all, but I can see it sliding into the Final. Once there, however, I think it will struggle against the competition, and Denmark will do well to secure automatical qualification for the 2005 Final. I fear this could end up propping up the bottom end of the table, along with Ireland and Austria."

What actually happened

Rated by many as one of the strongest songs in the Semi Final, Denmark gave us a lesson in how to ruin a song's chances at Eurovision. First, dress the artist and female backing singers in ghastly red outfits. Second, get the singer to dance, badly, and make little grimaces with his nose like Claire from Steps. Third, make sure everyone marches all over the stage so that the viewers at home are exhausted by the end of the performance. Quite frankly, the whole thing was just TOO much to cope with.

A close prediction here... rating Denmark only as a 'possible qualifier', I predicted that Tomas would finish around 9th to 11th, when he actually ended up 13th. Another 2 points and he WOULD have been 11th, but I'm not one to clutch at straws, oh no...

It can't be possible! I'm shocked! Europe is deaf! People in general don't know what good music is! Croatia, Serbia & Montenegro, FYR Macedonia and the Netherlands are in the final surely by mistake! On the other hand, countries like Denmark, Portugal, Israel and Andorra were eliminated in the semifinal with very good songs! I'm disappointed with Europe! It's always the same old thing! >:(

I wanna say I am really sad and sorry for results. Because in my list i thought that danmark will also be in finals, i really shocked...
But your song was really great.

I am really sorry and nervous for that....

I'm so angry that I could scream.
I'm so sorry that absolutely the BEST PERFORMANCE of the night isn't rewarded with a place in the final.
But I guess politics and nepotism still exists.
My toes is still crunch, from all the bad performancs, and untalented singers...Tomas..you were the best. The only fair entry in the final, was Cyprus, The Netherlands,F.Y.R Makedonia, and Ukraine. You should have been there with them.
Go and get you succes as a singer..you deserve it, and you'¨ve earned it.
Hugs from me :o)

There are a lot of cheap songs this year but this one is one the worse ... This kind of mediocre latin pop song is hardly bearable when it's sung by a pretty young boy but it becomes a torture when we have look at such an ugly face for 3 long minutes. I guess Denmark should send Birthe Kjaer again ... at least, we could have a good laugh looking at her infamous dance routines.

For all Denmark- Fans
There is a show on the swiss music channel "VIVA Schweiz" called "Interaktiv"
They showed small pieces of three ESC-Videos and you had the chance to televote for the song you would like to see fully at the end of the show.
Today: Denmark, Cyprus and Estonia.
And guess who won: DENMARK with 50% (Cyprus 30% and Estonia 20%).

From Bella, UNITED KINGDOM

This song is very catchy.. when I was listening to all the entries this one made me want to sing along and dance! I'm sure it will do well.

Go Go Denmark

From Robin J, SWEDEN
Added 22/04/2004 17:30
until a couple of years ago you could always count on denmark to have a catchy song. especially in the 80s. in 2001 they used that formula again, and did very well. but now... what happened??

From puppi, ISRAEL
Added 22/04/2004 13:48
very very old fashioned. Usually Denmark sends better songs...This hasn't got anything original to offer..even Ricky Martin songs sound better. A finalist - Not for sure!

From Klara, SWEDEN
Added 18/04/2004 18:20
I like this song. Some latino rytms, and the refrain is, as we says in Sweden, "Klatchig".
Så kör hårt Danmark!:)

From Thomas, GERMANY
Added 17/04/2004 19:59
What have we done to deserve latin-songs from cold northern countries like Denmark? It's really ridicoulous, just as Germany's "New-Orleans-Sound". But - Germany will win, Denmark won't!

From tim in brum, UNITED KINGDOM
Added 16/04/2004 00:08
this track definitely has something special about it... and as for the previous commments, i think tomas is well fit! ... and i think it wipes the floor with the swedish entry! definite qualifier! needs a good performance though but i'm sure tomas won't disappoint!

From Árný, ICELAND
Added 12/04/2004 16:33
Good song and Tomas has some Icelandic blood in him so go go go for him:)

From Carina, DENMARK
Added 11/04/2004 11:53
I think this years entry from Denmark is great.
I really can't understand, what his looks has got to do with anything, personally I think he's sexy.
But most importantly, this is a SONG CONTEST( not a beauty contest) Tomas has a great stage presens, and he has a great and strong voice. The song is rememerable and catchy. I really hope that he will make it to the final.
I think it has a good chance of being in the top 5, unfortunatly, I don't think it will beat Sweden. I'm afraid they are going to win again this year.I must admit, they really have a great song...again!

From Iván, SPAIN
Added 10/04/2004 20:17
I hope you reaches the final round & I also hope points for Spain since both songs are latin and catchy. If danish people voted for that song in the melodi grand prix, they should also vote for the Spanish song. Otherwise, i would not understand what type of music Danish people like. It would be quite suspicious as it was when Malta did not give any point to "dile que la quiero" in 2001 when the Maltese song " Another summer night" was quite similar.

From Petur, ICELAND
Added 09/04/2004 16:46
Just a catchy latin song with an ugly singer! No chance for getting in the first 5 songs! Wish u a better lack next year!

From Martin, DENMARK
Added 08/04/2004 12:10
Hey :)
I am quite sorry that you don't like our song. Well Maltas entry this year misses the good quality that your entries usually have! Chiara was for me the best performance ever whereas this years entry can be describes as SLIMY (sorry - did not find a better term)!
I am sure that Tomas will do well! All the Scandinavian entries this year seems to be quite strong! :)

From Sarah, UNITED KINGDOM
Added 06/04/2004 19:13
I don't agree with your prediction for Denmark, this is a lively catchy song which, if Tomas gives a good performance could do better than many people think.

From Sérgio Rego, PORTUGAL
Added 06/04/2004 16:34
A very pretentious entry, in my opinion. I really don't see anything special about it (probably because I'm not into latino music - being a latin guy myself!)

However, I think it will qualify.

From Steinar, NORWAY
Added 04/04/2004 20:04
Maybe a latino song from Denmark isn't what you expect the most, but it's a commercial, brezzy and catchy track. Possibly not the best as ESC-latino goes, but quite modern and fresh. This song has a wide eappal, latino songs have done well. And given it's easy and commerical nature, it can easilymake the final.
