History (1956 to 2003)

Cyprus's previous appearances: 21 year(s) out of 48 [note]
Years participated: 1981-1987; 1989-2000; 2002- [note]
Best result: 5th (1982, 1997)

Cyprus has a mixed record at Eurovision - most entries have either done very well (top ten) or very badly (the bottom few places), with little in between. High points to date have been 5th place finishes in 1982 and 1997, but Cyprus has never yet been a real contender for victory. The televoting era has not been kind to Cyprus, 2002's 6th place the only reward among generally unimpressive results - 11th in 1998, 22nd in 1999, 21st in 2000, and 20th in 2003. 1999's result was made worse by the fact that Marlain's 'Tha nai erotas' was one of the pre-contest favourites - indeed, with a strong, modern song and good performance I'm still puzzled by why it did quite so badly. Unfortunately for Cyprus, Greece was absent that year; otherwise, 'Tha nai erotas' would have gained a slightly better 14 points, instead of the 2 it actually got. In 2003, Stelios Konstantas might have been 'Feeling alive', but most of Europe wasn't by the end of his performance. He mustered only 15 points, 12 of those from Greece and 2 from Malta, who can always be guaranteed to vote strangely. Needless to say, Cyprus finds itself in the Semi Final, competing for that all important place in the Final.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 14
Position in Final draw: 21

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"Cyprus' hopes rest on Lisa Andreas, a UK-based teenager, performing what must be the most un-Cypriot sounding song ever. 'Stronger every minute' is one of the most surprising songs in this year's contest, and represents something quite different for Cyprus. Starting off a capella, Lisa's sweet vocals, accompanied by minimal orchestral backing, build up to a nice flourish at the end. It is a very simple but really rather beautiful song; coming after the high energy Albanian entry, the contrast could not be more pronounced."

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 1st to 3rd
My prediction for Final: Definite qualifier; 3rd to 7th, possible winner
See all my predictions for 2004

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"This is Cyprus' strongest entry for many years, and it will be a big surprise if it fails to reach the Final. Certainly, feedback from the fans and the promising bookmakers' odds suggest that this will do well. As a simple but very appealing song, it perhaps bears comparison with Norway's entry from 2003, where the similarly winsome Jostein Hasselgard secured an impressive 4th place for 'I'm not afraid to move on'. If Lisa can pull off a strong vocal on the night, Cyprus could do equally well. Certainly, I would not be at all surprised if this achieves the best ever Cypriot result, and it is definitely a contender for the Eurovision crown. Will the televoters choose Lisa's understated performance over Iceland's power ballad, Ukraine's rhythmic performance, Germany's soulful number, Sweden's anthem and Romania's catchiness? You never know."

What actually happened

Lisa's understated and classy performance in the Semi Final was a breath of fresh air after all the high jinks of Sakis, Ruslana and company - just 16-year-old Lisa, dressed simply in black, and her voice. True, not all the notes quite hit the mark, and a more mature voice might have had greater control over the song. Nevertheless, it was an impressive performance - quite good enough to secure Cyprus passage into the Final, where her repeat performance was certainly as good as Wednesday's, if not better.

From the start I had Cyprus earmarked as a definite qualifier for the Final, and so it proved, with Lisa finishing a very healthy 5th - not quite the 1st to 3rd I suggested, but near enough. However, I was spot on with my prediction for the Final, rightly guessing that Cyprus would end up between 3rd and 7th (it finished 5th again). So, overall, I think that deserves to be a 'right' rather than a 'close'...

I think this song is far too slow, it takes a while to get going, nice song, but far too slow for the eurovision.
