History (1956 to 2003)

Bosnia-Herzegovina's previous appearances: 9 year(s) out of 48 [note]
Years participated: 1993-1997; 1999; 2001- [note]
Best result: 7th (1999)

While its ex-Yugoslav neighbours, Croatia and Slovenia, have regularly finished in the top ten at Eurovision, Bosnia's record has tended to be less impressive; however, given the country's conflict, still ongoing at the time of Bosnia's first appearance in 1993, its very participation was poignant and welcome.

Bosnia was marooned in the mid-teens for much of the 90s - 16th in 1993, 15th in 1994, 14th in 1995 and 13th in 1996, before falling back again to 22nd in 1997. Missing 1998 through relegation, the country did surprisingly well in 1999 when Dino and Beatrice - late replacements after the originally selected song by Hari Mata Hari was disqualified - hit the heights of 7th place with 'Putnici', performed in a combination of Bosnian and French. Unfortunately, the system of calculating each country's five year average meant that Bosnia had to miss 2000's contest, before resuming normal service with a 14th place in 2001, 13th in 2002, and 16th in 2003. With seven of Bosnia's nine entries to date finishing between 13th and 16th place, no other country can presumably claim such a consistent record of underwhelming achievement. However, in 2004 Bosnia must first compete in the Semi Final if it is to stand any chance of finishing higher than 25th.

This year's entry

Position in Semi Final draw: 21
Position in Final draw: 12

What I said prior to the Semi Final:
"Bosnia have tried something different for 2004, selecting the popular young artist Deen as their performer, then holding a televote to choose his song. The winning composition, 'In the disco', is written by Vesna Pisarovic, who has already experienced Eurovision as the Croatian performer in 2002; Bosnia will no doubt be hoping that Deen can improve on Vesna's own 11th place finish. The song is a rather pleasant surprise, a high energy number that sounds like it's come straight from the dancefloor. Some have compared it to Donna Summer's 'Hot Stuff'; perhaps unfortunately, both the song and vocal performance reminds me more of Adam Rickett's 'I Breathe Again'. Deen himself is a handsome, moody looking character, with a flamboyant stage presence; the gallery of his official website includes an interesting range of photographs of Deen looking mean, pensive, sporting sunglasses, showing off his body, and wearing a hat seemingly borrowed from Will Young. As for the song, Deen makes it his own, his breathy, half-whispered vocals complimented by a bevy of dancefloor divas (female) on backing vocals. For all the song's campness, I rather like it - it certainly has to be the most chart-friendly Bosnian entry ever seen at Eurovision, but does it have what it takes to bring the 50th contest to Sarajevo?"

What I predicted...

My prediction for Semi Final: 8th to 12th
My prediction for Final: Possible qualifier; 13th to 16th if it does
See all my predictions for 2004

What I predicted prior to the Semi Final:
"With Deen likely to give an energetic and memorable performance in Istanbul, 'In the disco' is surely Bosnia's strongest effort for a long time. In terms of its position in the running order, it might well benefit from being sandwiched between two much slower songs (Serbia & Montenegro and the Netherlands), and from being the penultimate song performed on the night. Of all the ex-Yugoslav entries, it is certainly the most distinctive, and in my view the one most likely to reach the Final, possibly joined by Croatia or Serbia & Montenegro. If Deen manages to reach the Final, Bosnia could well end up in its regular 13th to 16th zone; a deserved higher placing is possible, though its unlikely that Deen will be challenging for Eurovision victory. Certainly, the bookies favour this song quite highly, though the response from fans seems surprisingly muted - mark this as a song that could do much better than many people expect."

What actually happened

I love Deen! With glitterballs, pumping dance beats, scantily clad dancers and an exposed chest, he brought Eurovision kicking and screaming into the 21st century. In fact, it was like the London club night G-A-Y transplanted to the Abdi Ipecki stadium. Deen's performance was great - energetic and fun, and somehow managing to give an excellent vocal at the same time as cavorting with all his ladies. As BBC commentator, Paddy O'Connell, archly observed, "a boy band member at the age of 15, Deen's swapped boys for girls... for the purposes of performance anyway". Incidentally, a round of applause to Paddy for providing a refreshing, funny and affectionate commentary during the Semi Final - what a pity we had to go back to the tired, repetitive ramblings of Mr Wogan during the Final. Move over, Terry, there's a new kid on the block... Anyway, back to Deen - I predicted that he would finish 8th to 12th in the Semi Final, so 7th wasn't too far out.

Deen's performance in the Final offered much the same as two days earlier, but given added oomph by being performed straight after Ivan Mikulic's ballad for Croatia - Bosnia and Croatia might be neighbours, but listening to their respective songs you would think they were on different planets.

I was a bit further away in my Final prediction, Deen securing 9th place rather than the 13th to 16th I'd suggested. Still, it's not a bad effort, and I'm delighted that Deen did even better than I predicted - he's fabulous, and deserved it! Shame on the UK, however, for giving him no points in the Final at all, yet managing to lavish 7 on the dreadful Irish entry.

What the bookies thought...

17/04/04 16-1
07/04/04 16-1
24/03/04 16-1

Originally underrated by the fans and bookies, Deen's lively performance at the Semi Final certainly attracted attention. A good 9th place in the Final represented Bosnia's best result since 1999.

(Odds quoted here were those offered by Coral.co.uk. 'F' indicates favourite, 'JF' joint favourite.)

of course he's gay, I mean you can see it from 10km away...however should it matter? not to normal people, but in the balcans the story's different.their upbringing persuaded them that homosexuality is evil, and violent as those people are-or better as they've shown to be-they would have gladly shoot them all-by them I mean homosexuals.deen's song is ok,but he should have sang "pobjednik"(winner) which was an option at the bosnian competition.I wish him well, though I wish he'd finally come out!that would make all mean and hurtfull people without a topic to confont him with. I'd just like to comment one thing-bosnia,croatia,slovenia,albania-they all gave 12 points to servia&montenegro which-shoul I remind you all-have slaughtered all of those nations in past ten years. within this fact I see a situation between a passive pedercica who admires a macho stud and wishes da mu ga jos malo zabije. no offence.

I think he has a very good chance because the song is chart friendly and lively. His excentricity (read: pink suites:))can only go to his benefit. Good luck to Deen!

Vesna Pisarovic, who wrote this song, said that song is inspired by Deen him self. One night they were out dancing and she was impressed by his movements on the dance floor :)
